🔧 Front Brake Pads - Replacement
Replacing the front pads on your Tacoma means removing the caliper, swapping the worn pads, and safely compressing the caliper piston before reassembly. This restores braking performance and helps prevent rotor damage from worn pads.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a level surface with the parking brake set and the transmission in Park.
- Use jack stands; never rely on the floor jack alone.
- Brake dust can be harmful. Wear safety glasses and a dust mask if available.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.
- Keep grease and brake fluid off the pads and rotor faces.
- No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and chock the rear wheels.
- Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck.
- Make sure the parking brake is fully engaged.
- Keep the ignition off while you work.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the front of the truck
- Use a floor jack to lift the front of the Tacoma at a safe frame or front crossmember lift point.
- Place jack stands under the frame and lower the truck onto them.
- Remove both front wheels with a 21mm lug wrench or socket.
Step 2: Remove the caliper
- Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts.
- Lift the caliper off the bracket.
- Support the caliper with a bungee cord or hook. Never let it hang.
Step 3: Remove the old pads and hardware
- Pull the inner and outer pads out of the bracket.
- Remove the old pad clips from the bracket with a flat-blade screwdriver.
- Inspect the rotor surface for deep grooves or cracks.
Step 4: Clean and prepare the bracket
- Use a wire brush and brake cleaner to clean the pad contact points.
- Install the new hardware clips from the front brake pad set.
- Apply a thin layer of brake grease to the pad contact points and clip ears only.
- Keep grease off the rotor.
Step 5: Compress the caliper piston
- Use a C-clamp or disc brake piston tool (specialty) to slowly push the piston back into the caliper.
- Watch the brake fluid level in the master cylinder so it does not overflow.
- If the fluid gets too high, remove a small amount with a clean shop towel or suction tool.
Step 6: Install the new pads
- Place the new inner and outer pads into the bracket.
- Make sure the wear indicators are in the correct position if your pad set includes them.
- Confirm the pads sit flat and move freely in the hardware clips.
Step 7: Reinstall the caliper
- Slide the caliper back over the new pads.
- Install the slide pin bolts by hand first, then tighten them with a 14mm socket.
- Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reinstall the wheel
- Put the wheel back on and thread the lug nuts by hand.
- Tighten them in a crisscross pattern with a 21mm lug wrench or socket.
- Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Repeat on the other side
- Perform the same steps on the opposite front wheel.
- Replace pads in pairs so braking stays even.
✅ After Repair
- Before moving the truck, press the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
- Check the brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
- Test at low speed first. Make a few gentle stops to seat the pads.
- For the first 200 miles, avoid hard stops unless needed for safety.
- Listen for rubbing or clicking. Recheck torque after the first drive.
