🔧 Tacoma - Front Brake Pad Replacement

Replacing the front brake pads restores safe stopping power and prevents rotor damage when pads get thin. On your Tacoma, you’ll remove the front caliper, swap pads (and hardware), then reassemble and bed-in the pads.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work on level ground and support the truck with jack stands before going under or removing wheels.
  • 🛑 Do not breathe brake dust; use brake cleaner, not compressed air.
  • 🛑 Never let the caliper hang by the brake hose; support it with a hook or bungee cord.
  • 🛑 Keep grease and brake fluid off pad/rotor friction surfaces.
  • 🛑 Do not press the brake pedal with the caliper removed.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 1/2" drive torque wrench (20-150 ft-lbs range)
  • 14mm socket
  • 17mm socket
  • Ratchet (3/8" drive)
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-80 ft-lbs range)
  • C-clamp (6" minimum) or disc brake piston compressor (specialty)
  • Large flathead screwdriver
  • Brake caliper hook or bungee cord
  • Wire brush
  • Shop rags
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Front brake pad hardware kit (clips/shims) - Qty: 1
  • Brake parts cleaner - Qty: 1
  • High-temp silicone brake lubricant - Qty: 1
  • Brake anti-squeal compound - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🧱 Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🛞 Break the front lug nuts loose 1/4 turn using a 21mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
  • 🧴 Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. Make sure it’s not overfilled; pushing the pistons back can raise the level.
  • 🧼 Lay out tools and keep grease/brake cleaner away from the new pad friction surfaces.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and remove the front wheels

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front and set the frame on jack stands.
  • Remove the lug nuts using a 21mm socket and ratchet, then remove both front wheels.

Step 2: Access the caliper

  • Turn the steering (by hand at the tire area) to give yourself more room to work on one side at a time.
  • Look at the caliper: the smaller bolts are the slide-pin bolts that hold the caliper to the bracket.

Step 3: Remove the caliper (do not disconnect the hose)

  • Remove the two caliper slide-pin bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket. If it’s tight, gently pry with a large flathead screwdriver.
  • Support the caliper with a brake caliper hook or bungee cord so the hose isn’t strained.
  • When reinstalling these bolts later: Torque to 34 N·m (25 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Remove old pads and hardware

  • Slide the old brake pads out of the bracket by hand.
  • Remove the stainless pad clips (hardware) from the bracket.
  • Clean the bracket pad “lands” (the areas the clips sit on) using a wire brush and shop rags.
  • Spray and wipe with brake parts cleaner. Clean metal helps prevent sticking.

Step 5: Compress the caliper piston

  • Place an old pad against the piston face, then slowly compress the piston using a C-clamp (or disc brake piston compressor (specialty)).
  • Go slowly and watch the brake fluid reservoir level under the hood as the piston retracts.
  • Stop when the piston is fully seated so the new, thicker pads will fit.

Step 6: Install new hardware and pads

  • Install the new pad clips from the hardware kit into the bracket.
  • Apply a thin film of high-temp silicone brake lubricant where the pad ears touch the clips (metal-to-metal contact points only).
  • Install the new pads into the bracket in the same positions as the old pads.
  • If your pads include shims, apply brake anti-squeal compound per the product directions to the back of the pads/shims only.

Step 7: Reinstall the caliper

  • Lower the caliper over the new pads.
  • Install the slide-pin bolts by hand first (to avoid cross-threading), then tighten using a 14mm socket and ratchet.
  • Final tighten with a 3/8" drive torque wrench: Torque to 34 N·m (25 ft-lbs).

Step 8: If you removed the caliper bracket (only if needed)

  • If you had to remove the bracket for any reason, reinstall the two bracket bolts using a 17mm socket.
  • Tighten with a 1/2" drive torque wrench: Torque to 123 N·m (91 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Reinstall wheels and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower the truck to the ground using the floor jack.
  • Torque lug nuts in a star pattern using a 1/2" drive torque wrench: Torque to 113 N·m (83 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • 🦶 Pump the brake pedal 8–15 times until it feels firm before shifting into gear or driving.
  • 🧴 Check brake fluid level and top off only if needed (do not overfill).
  • 👀 Look around both front calipers for leaks and make sure the brake hoses aren’t twisted.
  • 🛣️ Bed-in the pads: make 6–10 moderate stops from ~30–40 mph to ~5 mph, allowing a little cooling time between stops. Avoid hard stops for the first 200 miles.
  • 🔊 If you hear grinding, strong pull, or a soft pedal, stop and recheck your work.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$450 (parts + labor)
