šŸ”§ HR-V - Front Brake Pad Replacement

You’ll remove the front wheels, swing the front brake calipers out of the way, replace the pad set and hardware, then compress the caliper pistons so everything fits back together. This restores safe braking and prevents metal-to-metal damage to the rotors.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on a flat surface and support the HR-V with jack stands before going under or pulling wheels.
  • āš ļø Brakes get hot—let everything cool before touching calipers/rotors.
  • āš ļø Do not press the brake pedal while a caliper is off the rotor (it can push the piston out).
  • āš ļø Brake fluid can damage paint—wipe spills immediately and keep the reservoir cap area clean.
  • āš ļø If you use brake cleaner, wear eye protection and avoid breathing the spray.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 19mm socket
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 1/2" drive torque wrench (20-150 ft-lb range)
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 12mm socket
  • 17mm socket
  • Flat blade screwdriver
  • C-clamp (6" minimum)
  • Bungee cord
  • Wire brush
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Front brake pad hardware kit (abutment clips) - Qty: 1
  • Brake caliper grease (silicone) - Qty: 1
  • Brake parts cleaner - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Pop the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. Make sure it’s not overfilled (fluid level rises when you compress pistons).
  • Crack the front wheel lug nuts loose on the ground before lifting (about 1/4 turn) using a 19mm socket and breaker bar.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and remove the front wheels

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of the HR-V at the correct jacking point.
  • Set the vehicle onto jack stands before removing wheels.
  • Remove lug nuts with a 19mm socket and take both front wheels off.

Step 2: Locate the caliper and remove the caliper bolts

  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself room (left for right side work, right for left side work).
  • On the back of the caliper, remove the two caliper slide bolts using a 12mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Tip: Hold the caliper steady as bolts loosen.

Step 3: Support the caliper (do not let it hang)

  • Lift the caliper off the bracket and rotor.
  • Hang the caliper from the strut spring using a bungee cord so the brake hose isn’t stretched.

Step 4: Remove the old pads and hardware

  • Slide the inner and outer pads out of the bracket by hand. If stuck, gently pry with a flat blade screwdriver.
  • Remove the old stainless hardware/abutment clips from the bracket.

Step 5: Clean the bracket and install new hardware

  • Spray the bracket pad lands with brake cleaner spray and scrub rust buildup using a wire brush.
  • Install the new abutment clips from the hardware kit into the bracket.
  • Apply a thin film of brake caliper grease (silicone) where the pad ears contact the clips (do not get grease on pad friction material or rotor).

Step 6: Compress the caliper piston

  • Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston face.
  • Use a C-clamp (6" minimum) to slowly press the piston fully back into the caliper. (A C-clamp is a screw clamp that pushes the piston in evenly.)
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing; remove a little fluid if it’s close to overflowing.

Step 7: Install the new pads

  • Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket. Make sure they slide freely on the new clips.
  • If your pad set includes a wear indicator, install it in the same position as the original (commonly on the inner pad).

Step 8: Reinstall the caliper and torque the bolts

  • Swing the caliper back over the new pads.
  • Install the caliper slide bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading, then tighten with a 12mm socket.
  • Finish tightening using a torque wrench (a torque wrench tightens to an exact setting so bolts aren’t too loose or too tight): Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lb).

Step 9: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Reinstall both front wheels and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower the HR-V back to the ground using the floor jack.
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern with a torque wrench: Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lb).

Step 10: Pump the brake pedal to seat the pads

  • Before starting the engine, press the brake pedal repeatedly until it feels firm.
  • Recheck brake fluid level and top off only if needed (use the correct DOT brake fluid listed on the reservoir cap).

āœ… After Repair

  • Do a slow test drive in a safe area. Confirm normal stopping and no pulling, grinding, or clicking.
  • Bed-in the pads: make 6-10 moderate stops from ~30 mph down to ~5 mph, with short cool-down time between stops.
  • Recheck the brake fluid level after the drive and inspect for any leaks around the calipers.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $50-$150 (parts only)

You Save: $100-$350 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.0-1.5 hours.
