🔧 Front Brake Pads - Replacement

Replacing the front brake pads on your Tacoma restores braking performance and helps prevent rotor damage. Since this truck uses front disc brakes, the caliper must be removed and compressed before the new pads can fit.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a flat surface and chock the rear wheels.
  • Use jack stands. Never rely on the floor jack alone.
  • Brake dust may be harmful. Do not blow it off with compressed air.
  • Brake fluid may rise in the master cylinder when the caliper pistons are pushed back. Watch the reservoir level.
  • If your Tacoma has a worn pad wear sensor, inspect it before reusing.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 21mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Breaker bar
  • Torque wrench
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • C-clamp
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Wire brush
  • Brake cleaner
  • Bungee cord or mechanic's hook

🔩 Required Parts

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts before lifting the truck.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the front wheel

  • Use the 21mm socket and breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts one turn each.
  • Do not remove them yet.

Step 2: Lift and support the truck

  • Use the floor jack to raise the front of the Tacoma at a safe lift point.
  • Set the truck securely on jack stands.
  • Remove the wheel with the 21mm socket.

Step 3: Remove the caliper

  • Use the 14mm socket to remove the caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket carefully.
  • Use a bungee cord or mechanic's hook to support the caliper. Do not let it hang by the brake hose.

Step 4: Remove the old brake pads

  • Slide the old inner and outer pads out of the caliper bracket.
  • If the pads are stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently to pry them free.

Step 5: Inspect and clean the hardware

  • Use a wire brush and brake cleaner to clean the caliper bracket where the pad ears sit.
  • Inspect the slide pins for smooth movement.
  • Clean contact points help prevent squeaks.

Step 6: Compress the caliper piston

  • Use a C-clamp to slowly push the caliper piston all the way back into the caliper.
  • Check the brake fluid reservoir while compressing. Remove a small amount if it gets too full.

Step 7: Install the new pads

  • Apply a thin layer of brake grease to the pad ears and contact points only.
  • Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket.
  • Make sure the pads sit fully in place.

Step 8: Reinstall the caliper

  • Slide the caliper back over the new pads.
  • Install the slide pin bolts using the 14mm socket.
  • Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reinstall the wheel

  • Put the wheel back on and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the truck and remove the jack stands.
  • Use the 21mm socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Pump the brake pedal

  • Before moving the truck, pump the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
  • This seats the pads against the rotor.

✅ After Repair

  • Check the brake fluid level and top off if needed.
  • Test the brakes at low speed in a safe area.
  • Listen for rubbing or grinding noises.
  • For the first 200 miles, avoid hard stops unless needed for safety.
  • New pads need a short break-in period.
