🔧 A3 - Front Brake Pad Replacement
You’ll remove the front caliper, swap the old pads for new ones, and compress the caliper piston so everything fits back together. New pads restore safe stopping power and prevent rotor damage when pads get thin.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours
Assumption: your A3 has the common single-piston floating front calipers.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧯 Support the car with jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
- 🔥 Brakes can be hot; let them cool before touching.
- 🧪 Brake fluid can damage paint; keep rags handy and wipe spills immediately.
- 🛑 Do not press the brake pedal while the caliper is off the rotor.
- đź‘“ Wear safety glasses when using brake cleaner.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- 17mm socket
- 1/2" drive breaker bar
- 1/2" drive torque wrench (20-200 Nm range)
- 13mm socket
- 15mm combination wrench
- Flathead screwdriver
- Brake caliper piston compressor tool (specialty)
- Small wire brush
- Bungee cord
- Shop rags
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
- Front brake pad wear sensor - Qty: 1
- Brake caliper hardware kit - Qty: 1
- Brake grease (silicone-based) - Qty: 1
- Brake cleaner - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, turn the wheel so you can access the caliper, and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Open the hood and check the brake fluid level. When you compress the piston, the level may rise; remove a little fluid only if it’s near the MAX line.
- Loosen the front wheel bolts slightly with a 17mm socket and breaker bar before lifting the car.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and remove the front wheels
- Lift the front at the approved jacking point using a floor jack, then set the car securely on jack stands.
- Remove the wheel bolts using a 17mm socket.
Step 2: Inspect the caliper and locate the pad wear sensor (if equipped)
- Look for a small wire going into one front pad (commonly the left front inner pad). If present, that’s the wear sensor.
- Use a flathead screwdriver to gently release any sensor wire clips from the strut/control arm so the wire isn’t pulled tight.
Step 3: Remove the caliper guide/slider bolts
- Find the two caliper slider bolts on the back side of the caliper.
- Use a 13mm socket to remove each slider bolt while holding the slider with a 15mm combination wrench (this “counter-holds” it so it doesn’t spin).
Step 4: Remove and support the caliper
- Lift the caliper off the rotor.
- Hang the caliper from the suspension spring/strut using a bungee cord.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.
Step 5: Remove old pads and hardware
- Pull the inner and outer pads out by hand.
- Remove the stainless hardware clips from the caliper bracket (if your kit includes replacements).
- Clean pad contact areas on the bracket with a wire brush and wipe with shop rags.
Step 6: Compress the caliper piston
- Place an old pad against the piston face.
- Use a brake caliper piston compressor tool (specialty) to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
- Go slowly to avoid fluid overflow.
Step 7: Install new hardware and pads
- Install the new stainless hardware clips (if provided) into the bracket.
- Apply a thin film of brake grease (silicone-based) where the pad “ears” slide on the hardware.
- Install the new pads into the bracket in the same positions as removed.
- If equipped, connect the new wear sensor to the inner pad and route the wire in the factory clips.
Step 8: Reinstall the caliper and torque fasteners
- Place the caliper over the new pads/rotor.
- Install the slider bolts by hand first, then tighten with a 13mm socket while counter-holding with a 15mm combination wrench.
- Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs) for the caliper guide/slider bolts.
Step 9: Reinstall wheels and torque wheel bolts
- Reinstall the wheel and snug the bolts using a 17mm socket.
- Lower the car, then torque the wheel bolts with a torque wrench.
- Torque to 120 Nm (89 ft-lbs) for the wheel bolts.
Step 10: Restore brake pedal feel
- Before driving, pump the brake pedal 10–15 times until it feels firm.
- Recheck brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
âś… After Repair
- With the engine on, press and hold the brake pedal for 10 seconds to confirm it stays firm.
- Do a slow test drive in a safe area. Confirm normal braking and no pulling/noises.
- Bed-in the pads: make 6–10 moderate stops from ~30–40 mph to ~5 mph, allowing short cool-down between stops.
- If a brake pad warning light stays on, recheck the wear sensor connection and routing.
đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $250-$550 (parts + labor)
DIY Cost: $70-$180 (parts only)
You Save: $180-$370 by doing it yourself!
Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.0-1.5 hours.
