🔧 CX-5 - Front Brake Pad Replacement
Replacing the front brake pads on your CX-5 involves removing the front wheels, swinging the brake caliper up, swapping the pads, and compressing the caliper piston so everything fits back together. Worn pads reduce stopping power and can damage the rotors if you wait too long.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Support the SUV with jack stands before working under/around a wheel.
- ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while the caliper is off the rotor.
- ⚠️ Brake parts get hot; work on a cool brake system.
- ⚠️ Brake fluid can overflow when compressing the piston; watch the reservoir level.
- ⚠️ Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose; support it with a hook/strap.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- 21mm socket
- 3/8" drive ratchet
- 1/2" drive breaker bar
- 14mm socket
- 17mm socket
- Torque wrench (20–200 Nm range)
- Large C-clamp
- Flathead screwdriver
- Wire brush
- Bungee cord
- Brake cleaner spray
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
- Brake pad hardware kit (front) - Qty: 1
- Brake caliper grease (silicone) - Qty: 1
- Brake fluid (DOT 3) - Qty: 1 (small bottle for top-off if needed)
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
- Crack the front lug nuts loose 1/2 turn using a 21mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
- Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. Do not remove fluid yet—just be ready to stop overflow.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and remove the front wheels
- Lift the front of the SUV with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the correct front jack point.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the front support points and lower onto the stands.
- Remove lug nuts with a 21mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet, then remove both front wheels.
Step 2: Access the front brake caliper
- Turn the steering wheel to give you more room (turn left for right side work, and right for left side work).
- Inspect the caliper, rotor, and brake hose for cracks, leaks, or rubbing.
Step 3: Remove the caliper slide bolts
- Remove the two caliper slide bolts using a 14mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Lift the caliper off the bracket. Use a bungee cord to support the caliper so it doesn’t hang by the hose.
- Tip: Hook the bungee to the strut spring.
Step 4: Remove the old pads and hardware
- Slide the old inner and outer pads out of the bracket by hand.
- Remove the pad clips (hardware) from the bracket.
- Clean the bracket pad “rails” with a wire brush, then spray with brake cleaner spray and let dry.
- Tip: Clean rails help prevent squeaks.
Step 5: Compress the caliper piston
- Place one old pad against the piston face.
- Use a large C-clamp to slowly press the piston fully back into the caliper.
- Check the brake fluid reservoir while compressing. If it nears the top, pause and remove a small amount (do not spill on paint).
- Large C-clamp definition: a screw clamp that pushes the piston back in evenly.
Step 6: Install new hardware and pads
- Install new pad clips from the brake pad hardware kit (front) onto the bracket.
- Apply a thin film of brake caliper grease (silicone) where the pad “ears” touch the clips (metal-to-metal contact points only).
- Install the new pads into the bracket (match inner vs outer if they differ).
Step 7: Reinstall the caliper
- Carefully lower the caliper over the new pads.
- Thread the slide bolts in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten slide bolts using a 14mm socket and torque wrench (20–200 Nm range): Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Repeat on the other front wheel
- Repeat Steps 3–7 on the other side.
- Replace pads on both sides as a pair for even braking.
Step 9: Reinstall wheels and lower the SUV
- Reinstall wheels and hand-thread lug nuts.
- Lower off the jack stands using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench (20–200 Nm range): Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- With the engine off, pump the brake pedal 10–15 times until it feels firm. This seats the pads against the rotors.
- Check the brake fluid reservoir and top off with DOT 3 only if needed.
- Do a slow test drive in a safe area. Confirm normal stopping and no pulling or grinding.
- Pad bed-in (recommended): make 6–8 moderate stops from ~40 mph to ~10 mph, allowing short cool-down between stops (no panic stops).
- Recheck lug nut torque after 50–100 miles using a torque wrench (20–200 Nm range).
💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
