🔧 Juke - Front Brake Pad Replacement
You’ll remove the front wheels, swing the front brake calipers up, replace the pads and hardware, then retract (push back) the caliper pistons so the new thicker pads fit. Doing this correctly restores safe stopping power and prevents noise and uneven wear.

Assumption: factory front single-piston floating calipers.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, leave the transmission in gear, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
- Crack the front lug nuts loose 1/4 turn using a 21mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
- Open the hood and check the brake fluid level. If the reservoir is very full, remove a little fluid before compressing pistons.
- A “floating caliper” slides on pins. That’s why we only remove the caliper bolts first.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the front end
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of your Juke at the front center jack point.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the proper front support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
- Give the car a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable.
Step 2: Remove the front wheels
- Remove the lug nuts with a 21mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Remove both front wheels and set them aside.
Step 3: Remove the caliper mounting bolts
- Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room at the caliper.
- Locate the two caliper slide-pin bolts on the back side of the caliper.
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the caliper slide-pin bolts.
Step 4: Swing the caliper up and support it
- Carefully lift/swing the caliper off the pads.
- Hang the caliper from the strut spring using a bungee cord.
- Never let it dangle by the hose.
Step 5: Remove old pads and hardware
- Slide the old inner and outer pads out by hand. If stuck, gently pry with a flathead screwdriver (medium).
- Remove the stainless abutment clips (hardware) from the caliper bracket using a flathead screwdriver (medium).
- Inspect the rotor surface. If it’s deeply grooved or heavily rust-lipped, pads alone may not fix noise/vibration.
Step 6: Clean the bracket and install new hardware
- Spray the bracket contact areas with brake cleaner spray.
- Lightly scrub rust from the pad “shelves” with a wire brush (small).
- Install the new abutment clips from the hardware kit (they snap into the bracket).
- Apply a thin film of high-temp silicone brake grease where the pad ears touch the clips.
- Grease goes on metal-to-metal sliding points only.
Step 7: Retract the caliper piston
- Place one old pad against the piston face to spread the force evenly.
- Use a C-clamp (6" minimum) to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing; stop if it approaches overflow.
- Slow compression helps prevent seal damage.
Step 8: Install the new pads
- Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket (same positions as removed).
- If your pad set includes shims, install them exactly as the pad instructions show.
- Apply a very thin layer of high-temp silicone brake grease to the pad backing plate where it contacts the caliper (not on the friction material).
Step 9: Reinstall the caliper and torque bolts
- Lower the caliper back over the new pads.
- Reinstall the slide-pin bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten using a 14mm socket and torque wrench (10-200 Nm range): Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- If a bolt won’t start by hand, stop and realign.
Step 10: Repeat on the other front side
- Repeat Steps 3–9 on the other front wheel.
Step 11: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts
- Install the wheels and hand-thread the lug nuts.
- Lower the vehicle off the stands using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Torque lug nuts in a star pattern using a 21mm socket and torque wrench (10-200 Nm range): Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Press the brake pedal 10–15 times before driving until it feels firm. This seats the pistons against the new pads.
- Recheck brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
- Test at low speed first. Confirm normal braking and no pulling.
- Bed-in (break-in) the pads: make 6–8 moderate stops from 30–40 mph, allowing 30–60 seconds between stops.
- Recheck for leaks, odd smells, or abnormal noises after the first short drive.
