🔧 Soul - Front Brake Pad Replacement
You’ll remove the front wheels, swing the front brake calipers out of the way, swap in new pads, and then reassemble with correct bolt torque. New pads restore braking power and prevent rotor damage when the old pads get thin.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours
Assumption: Factory front single-piston sliding calipers (most Souls).
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on level ground and support the car with jack stands before going under or removing wheels.
- ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed; the piston can pop out and leak fluid.
- ⚠️ Brake dust is harmful—avoid blowing with compressed air; use brake cleaner instead.
- ⚠️ Watch brake fluid level when compressing pistons; it can overflow the reservoir.
- ⚠️ Let brakes cool first; hot rotors/calipers can burn you.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Breaker bar (1/2" drive)
- Torque wrench (1/2" drive, 20-200 Nm range)
- 21mm socket
- 14mm socket
- 17mm socket
- Ratchet (3/8" drive)
- Flathead screwdriver (medium)
- C-clamp (6") or disc brake piston compressor (specialty)
- Brake cleaner spray
- Wire brush (small)
- Bungee cord or mechanic wire

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
- Brake pad hardware/clip kit - Qty: 1
- Brake caliper grease (silicone-based) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, leave the transmission in 1st gear, and set the parking brake.
- 🧱 Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
- 🧴 Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir; keep the cap on, but be ready to clean any spills.
- 🧰 Lay out parts and tools. A “slide pin” is the small bolt that lets the caliper move; it must be tight and greased.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the front wheel lug nuts
- Use a 21mm socket with a breaker bar (1/2" drive) to loosen each front lug nut about 1/2 turn.
- Loosen on the ground; safer.
Step 2: Lift and support the front of the car
- Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift the front at the proper jacking point.
- Place jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) under solid support points and lower the car onto them.
- Give the car a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable.
Step 3: Remove the front wheels
- Remove the lug nuts using a 21mm socket and take both front wheels off.
Step 4: Access the caliper and remove the slide pin bolts
- Turn the steering to give yourself room (left side: turn wheel right; right side: turn wheel left).
- Use a 14mm socket with a ratchet (3/8" drive) to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts (upper and lower).
- Lift the caliper off the bracket and support it with a bungee cord or mechanic wire so it doesn’t hang by the brake hose.
Step 5: Remove the old pads and hardware clips
- Pull the old pads out of the bracket by hand. If they’re stuck, gently pry with a flathead screwdriver (medium).
- Remove the pad hardware clips from the bracket.
- Clean the bracket pad “lands” (where clips sit) using brake cleaner spray and a wire brush (small).
Step 6: Compress the caliper piston
- Place one of the old pads against the piston face to protect it.
- Use a C-clamp (6") or disc brake piston compressor (specialty) to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
- Check the brake fluid reservoir as you compress; if it rises near the top, clean up and prevent overflow.
- Compress slowly to avoid fluid splash.
Step 7: Install new hardware clips and new pads
- Install the new hardware clips into the bracket by hand (they should snap/seat flat).
- Apply a very thin film of brake caliper grease (silicone-based) to the metal-to-metal contact points where pads slide on the clips (do not get grease on pad friction material).
- Install the new pads into the bracket in the same orientation as the old ones.
Step 8: Reinstall the caliper and torque the bolts
- Set the caliper back over the new pads.
- Install the slide pin bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading, then tighten with a 14mm socket.
- Torque to 25-30 Nm (18-22 ft-lbs) for the caliper slide pin bolts.
Step 9: If you removed the caliper bracket (only if needed), torque bracket bolts
- If you had to remove the bracket for access, reinstall it using a 17mm socket.
- Torque to 80-100 Nm (59-74 ft-lbs) for the caliper bracket bolts.
Step 10: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts
- Reinstall both front wheels and hand-tighten lug nuts.
- Lower the car off the jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).
- Use a torque wrench (1/2" drive, 20-200 Nm range) with a 21mm socket to tighten lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 90-110 Nm (66-81 ft-lbs) for the lug nuts.
âś… After Repair
- 🦶 With the engine OFF, press the brake pedal 10-15 times until it feels firm (this seats the pads and piston).
- 🧪 Start the engine and confirm the pedal still feels firm; it may drop slightly with power assist.
- 🔍 Check the brake fluid level at the reservoir and top off only if needed (correct DOT rating per cap/owner info).
- đź‘‚ Road test at low speed first; listen for grinding and confirm straight, smooth stops.
- 🛑 Pad bedding: do 6-10 moderate stops from ~30 mph to 5 mph, with cool-down driving between stops.
