🔧 F-250 Super Duty - Front Brake Pad Replacement
On your F-250, front pads can be replaced without opening the brake hydraulic system, as long as you don’t disconnect the brake hose. The only “gotcha” is that Ford used different front caliper/bracket setups depending on SRW vs DRW (and brake package), which changes the exact bolt sizes and torque specs.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Support the truck with jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
- 🧤 Brakes make dust—wear a mask and avoid blowing dust with compressed air.
- 🔥 Rotors/calipers can be hot if you just drove—let them cool.
- 🔩 Don’t let the caliper hang by the brake hose; support it with a hanger.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for front pads on your F-250.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
- Loosen the front lug nuts 1/2 turn using a 21mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
- Quick check (needed for exact bolt sizes + torque specs): Is your F-250 SRW (single rear wheel) or DRW (dually)? If you’re not sure, tell me if you have rear fender flares and two rear tires per side.
- If you can, upload a clear photo of the back side of the front caliper showing the bolts. That lets me match your exact caliper/bracket and give you the correct Ford torque specs.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the front end
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front at the proper jacking point.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the frame and lower the truck onto them.
- Remove the wheel using a 21mm socket and ratchet (3/8-inch drive).
- Turn the steering for more access.
Step 2: Open the brake fluid reservoir (control overflow)
- Open the hood and remove the brake fluid reservoir cap by hand.
- If the reservoir is very full, siphon a small amount out (do not spill).
Step 3: Remove the caliper and support it
- Remove the caliper guide/slide bolts using the correct socket set (8mm-24mm) and ratchet (3/8-inch drive). (Exact size depends on SRW/DRW setup.)
- Lift the caliper off the rotor. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry if needed.
- Hang the caliper from the suspension using a bungee cord.
Step 4: Remove old pads and hardware
- Pull the old pads out of the bracket by hand.
- Remove the pad abutment clips (hardware) from the bracket by hand or with a flat-blade screwdriver.
Step 5: Clean and service the bracket
- Spray the bracket pad contact areas with brake cleaner spray.
- Use a wire brush to clean rust where the new clips sit.
- Install the new hardware clips from the brake hardware kit (clips).
Step 6: Compress the caliper piston
- Place an old pad against the piston, then compress the piston slowly using a C-clamp (6-inch) or brake caliper piston compressor (specialty).
- Watch the brake fluid level while compressing; don’t let it overflow.
Step 7: Install the new pads
- Apply a thin film of brake caliper grease (silicone) to pad ears/contact points where they slide in the clips.
- Install the new pads into the bracket by hand.
Step 8: Reinstall the caliper
- Slide the caliper back over the new pads.
- Install and tighten the caliper bolts using the correct socket set (8mm-24mm) and a torque wrench (30-250 ft-lbs range).
- Torque spec note: I’ll give you the exact Ford torque values as soon as you confirm SRW vs DRW (and/or share a caliper photo), because the caliper/bracket setup determines the correct numbers.
Step 9: Reinstall wheel
- Reinstall the wheel and hand-start all lug nuts.
- Lower the truck and tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench (30-250 ft-lbs range).
- Torque to 224 Nm (165 ft-lbs)
âś… After Repair
- Before driving, pump the brake pedal slowly 10-15 times until it feels firm.
- Recheck the brake fluid level and reinstall the reservoir cap by hand.
- Test at low speed first. Confirm normal stopping and no pulling/noise.
- Check for leaks and recheck lug nut torque after 50-100 miles.
