🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the front and remove the wheels

• Use a floor jack to lift the front at the correct jacking point, then support with jack stands.
• Remove the front wheels using a 21mm socket.

Step 2: Inspect the brake hose and caliper area

• Turn the steering wheel to give yourself room to work (left side: turn wheel right; right side: turn wheel left).
• Visually check the rubber brake hose for cracks or wetness (leaks).

Step 3: Remove the caliper (keep the bracket on)

• Use a 14mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the two caliper slide bolts.
• Lift the caliper off the pads/rotor.
• Support the caliper with a brake caliper hanger hook so there’s no strain on the hose.
• Don’t twist the brake hose.
• Torque to 25–35 Nm (18–26 ft-lbs) when reinstalling the caliper slide bolts.

Step 4: Remove the old pads and hardware

• Pull the inner and outer pads out of the bracket by hand; use a flat-blade screwdriver gently if they’re stuck.
• Remove the stainless abutment clips (pad hardware) from the bracket.
• Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to clean the bracket pad-contact areas.
• Use a wire brush to remove heavy rust where the clips seat.

Step 5: Compress the caliper piston

• Check the brake fluid reservoir under the hood before compressing; remove some fluid with a towel if it’s near “MAX”.
• Use a C-clamp or disc brake piston compressor to slowly press the caliper piston fully back in.
• Press slowly and evenly; stop if you feel sudden hard resistance.
• Slow compression helps avoid seal damage.

Step 6: Install new hardware and pads

• Install the new abutment clips onto the bracket by hand.
• Apply a thin film of brake grease where the pad ears slide on the clips (do not get grease on pad friction material).
• Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket.

Step 7: Reinstall the caliper

• Lower the caliper over the new pads.
• Start both slide bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading, then tighten using a 14mm socket and torque wrench.
• Torque to 25–35 Nm (18–26 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Repeat on the other front wheel

• Perform the same steps on the opposite side.
• Always replace pads on both sides.

Step 9: Reinstall wheels and lower the CX-5

• Reinstall the wheels and hand-tighten lug nuts using a 21mm socket.
• Lower the vehicle off the jack stands using the floor jack.
• Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern with a torque wrench.
• Torque to 108–147 Nm (80–108 ft-lbs).

• ✅ Pump the brake pedal firmly 10–15 times before driving until the pedal feels normal (this seats the pistons against the new pads).
