🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts

• Use a 22mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front wheel lug nut about 1 turn.
• Do this while the tires are still touching the ground.
• Loosen only, do not remove yet.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front

• Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to raise the front of your Grand Cherokee at the front center jacking point or one front side jacking point at a time.
• Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the approved front support points.
• Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
• Shake the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

• Use the 22mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
• Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly

• Use a flashlight if needed to look at the pads, rotor, and caliper area.
• Check for deep rotor grooves, heavy rust, brake fluid leaks, or torn caliper slide pin boots.
• If the rotor is deeply grooved, cracked, or below minimum thickness, replace the rotors too.

Step 5: Remove the Lower Caliper Bolt

• Use a 13mm socket on the caliper guide pin bolt.
• Use an 18mm wrench to hold the guide pin if it spins.
• Remove the lower caliper bolt.
• A guide pin lets the caliper slide smoothly as the brakes wear.

Step 6: Swing the Caliper Up

• Use a flat blade screwdriver carefully between the pad and rotor to create a little clearance.
• Swing the caliper upward off the brake pads.
• Use a bungee cord to support the caliper from the suspension.
• Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.

Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads

• Slide the old inner and outer brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
• Use a flat blade screwdriver gently if a pad is stuck.
• Notice the position of any wear indicator tab so the new pads match the same layout.

Step 8: Remove and Clean the Pad Hardware

• Use a flat blade screwdriver to remove the old stainless pad clips from the caliper bracket.
• Use a wire brush to clean the bracket areas where the clips sit.
• Spray the bracket contact areas with brake cleaner spray and wipe with shop towels.
• Do not spray brake cleaner on painted body panels.

Step 9: Install the New Pad Hardware

• Snap the new front brake pad hardware kit clips into the caliper bracket by hand.
• Apply a thin film of brake lubricant to the pad contact points on the clips.
• Do not get grease on the rotor face or pad friction material.
• Thin grease only. More is not better.

Step 10: Compress the Caliper Pistons

• Check the brake fluid reservoir under the hood before compressing the pistons.
• Use a brake caliper piston compressor (specialty) to push the caliper pistons fully back into the caliper.
• A piston is the round metal part inside the caliper that pushes the brake pad.
• Compress slowly so brake fluid does not overflow from the reservoir.

Step 11: Install the New Brake Pads

• Slide the new front brake pad set into the caliper bracket by hand.
• Make sure the pads move smoothly in the hardware clips.
• If a pad binds, remove it and clean the bracket again with the wire brush.

Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper

• Remove the bungee cord and swing the caliper down over the new pads.
• Install the lower caliper bolt by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
• Use the 13mm socket and 18mm wrench to tighten the caliper bolt.
• Torque to 31 Nm (23 ft-lbs)

Step 13: Repeat on the Other Front Side

• Repeat Steps 5 through 12 on the other front brake.
• Always replace front brake pads as a complete axle set, left and right together.

Step 14: Reinstall the Front Wheels

• Put each wheel back onto the hub by hand.
• Install the lug nuts by hand first.
• Use the 22mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 15: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts

• Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to raise the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
• Remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
• Lower the vehicle until the tires touch the ground.
• Use the torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs) and 22mm lug nut socket to tighten lug nuts in a star pattern.
• Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs)

Step 16: Pump the Brake Pedal

• Sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal slowly 5-10 times.
• The pedal will feel soft at first, then become firm.
• Do not drive until the brake pedal feels firm.
