🔧 Town & Country - Front Brake Pad Replacement
You’ll be removing the front calipers, swapping the old pads for new ones, and compressing the caliper piston so everything fits back together. This restores braking performance and prevents metal-to-metal damage that can ruin the rotors.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours
Assumption: factory front single-piston sliding calipers.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Support the van on jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
- 🛑 Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks and keep the van on level ground.
- 🛑 Do not breathe brake dust; use brake cleaner and wear a dust mask.
- 🛑 Brake parts get hot—work only on a cool brake system.
- 🛑 Don’t press the brake pedal while a caliper is off the rotor.
- 🛑 Watch brake fluid level—compressing the piston can overflow the reservoir.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- 21mm socket
- 1/2" drive breaker bar
- 1/2" drive torque wrench (20–200 ft-lbs range)
- 13mm socket
- 18mm socket
- Ratchet (3/8" or 1/2")
- C-clamp (6" minimum)
- Flat-blade screwdriver
- Bungee cord
- Wire brush
- Small drip pan
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Dust mask

- Front brake pad hardware kit - Qty: 1
- Brake caliper grease (silicone) - Qty: 1
- Brake cleaner - Qty: 1
- Threadlocker (medium strength) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🔧 Park on level ground, put the shifter in P, and set the parking brake.
- 🔧 Place wheel chocks behind both rear tires.
- 🔧 Crack the front lug nuts loose 1/4 turn using a 21mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
- 🔧 Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir level; if it’s near MAX, use a clean rag to catch any overflow when you compress the piston.
- 🔧 “Caliper piston” = the round plunger that pushes the pads; you’ll press it back in with a C-clamp (a screw clamp that squeezes parts together).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the front end
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front at the proper jacking point.
- Set the van onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Remove the wheels using a 21mm socket and ratchet.
Step 2: Access the caliper and check pad thickness
- Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room at the side you’re working on.
- Look at the rotor and pads to confirm you’re working on the correct components.
Step 3: Remove the caliper guide pin bolts
- Use a 13mm socket and ratchet to remove the two caliper guide pin bolts (upper and lower).
- Carefully lift the caliper off the rotor.
- Hang the caliper from the strut spring using a bungee cord so the brake hose isn’t strained.
Step 4: Remove the old pads and hardware
- Pull the old inner and outer pads out by hand; use a flat-blade screwdriver gently if they’re stuck.
- Remove the stainless pad clips (hardware) from the bracket.
Step 5: Clean and prep the bracket
- Use brake cleaner to wash off dust and grime (aim into a small drip pan).
- Use a wire brush to clean the pad-clip “seats” on the bracket until smooth.
- Install the new pad clips from the front brake pad hardware kit.
- Apply a very thin film of brake caliper grease (silicone) where the pad ears slide on the clips. Don’t grease the pad friction surface.
Step 6: Compress the caliper piston
- Place one old brake pad against the piston face (this protects it).
- Use a C-clamp (6" minimum) to slowly press the piston fully back into the caliper.
- Check the brake fluid reservoir under the hood while compressing; stop if it’s about to overflow.
Step 7: Install the new pads
- Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand.
- If the pad set includes a wear indicator, place it the same way the original was installed.
Step 8: Reinstall the caliper
- Lower the caliper over the new pads and rotor by hand.
- Install the guide pin bolts using a 13mm socket and ratchet.
- Tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Repeat on the other front wheel
- Repeat Steps 2–8 on the opposite side.
- Always replace pads on both front wheels.
Step 10: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts
- Reinstall the wheels using a 21mm socket.
- Lower the van off the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern with a torque wrench: Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).
âś… After Repair
- 🔧 Pump the brake pedal 10–15 times until it feels firm (this seats the pads against the rotors).
- 🔧 Check brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
- 🔧 Start the engine and confirm the brake pedal remains firm.
- 🔧 Do a slow test drive in a safe area; confirm no pulling, grinding, or warning lights.
- 🔧 Pad break-in: make 6–10 moderate stops from 40 to 10 mph, with cool-down driving between stops. Avoid hard panic stops at first.
đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $250-$450 (parts + labor)
DIY Cost: $60-$180 (parts only)
