🔧 Front Brake Pads - Replacement
Your Sienna’s front brake pads wear faster than the rear pads, so replacing them when they get thin helps keep braking smooth and safe. This job also gives you a chance to inspect the rotors, calipers, and slide pins for uneven wear or sticking.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a level surface and chock the rear wheels before lifting the front end.
- Use jack stands; never rely on the floor jack alone. A floor jack is a lifting tool, not a support stand.
- Brake dust may be present. Wear safety glasses and gloves.
- Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
- If the caliper piston is hard to compress, stop and inspect the slide pins and brake hose.
- No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 21mm lug wrench or 21mm socket

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
- Keep the ignition off while servicing the brakes.
- If your brake fluid level is near the MAX line, watch it while compressing the caliper piston. Fluid can overflow.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the front wheel
- Use the 21mm lug wrench or 21mm socket to loosen the front lug nuts on both front wheels.
- Do not remove them yet.
Step 2: Lift and support the front of the van
- Use the floor jack at the front jacking point and raise the vehicle.
- Place the vehicle securely on jack stands.
- Lower the van gently onto the stands and give it a small shake to confirm it is stable.
Step 3: Remove the wheel
- Finish removing the lug nuts with the 21mm lug wrench or 21mm socket.
- Remove the wheel and set it aside flat on the ground.
Step 4: Remove the caliper bolts
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts.
- Support the caliper with a bungee cord or mechanic's wire so the brake hose is not stretched.
Step 5: Remove the old pads and hardware
- Lift the caliper off the bracket carefully.
- Remove the old brake pads from the bracket.
- Remove the pad clips and hardware from the bracket if they are included in your new kit.
- Tip: Take a quick photo before removal.
Step 6: Inspect and clean the bracket
- Use a wire brush and brake cleaner to clean rust and brake dust from the pad contact points.
- Inspect the rotor surface for deep grooves, heavy rust, or cracks.
- If the rotor is badly worn, it should be replaced or resurfaced before installing new pads.
Step 7: Service the slide pins
- Remove the slide pins if needed and inspect them for sticking or torn boots.
- Apply brake caliper slide pin grease to the pins after cleaning them.
- Make sure the pins move smoothly by hand.
Step 8: Compress the caliper piston
- Use a C-clamp or brake caliper compression tool (specialty) to slowly push the piston back into the caliper.
- Move slowly so brake fluid can return to the reservoir.
- Keep the old inner pad against the piston if needed to spread the load.
Step 9: Install the new hardware and pads
- Install the new pad clips and hardware from the brake pad hardware kit.
- Install the new inner and outer brake pads into the bracket.
- Make sure they seat fully and move freely in the clips.
Step 10: Reinstall the caliper
- Place the caliper back over the new pads.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to install the caliper slide pin bolts.
- Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Reinstall the wheel
- Put the wheel back on and install the lug nuts finger-tight.
- Lower the vehicle carefully with the floor jack.
- Use the 21mm lug wrench or 21mm socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat the same process on the opposite front wheel.
- Replace front pads in pairs so braking stays even.
✅ After Repair
- Before moving the van, press the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
- Check the brake fluid reservoir level and top off only if needed.
- Test brake operation at low speed in a safe area.
- Expect new pads to need a short break-in period for best performance.
- Listen for rubbing, clicking, or grinding. Recheck the installation if you hear anything unusual.
