How to Replace Front Brake Pads on a 2011-2022 Ford F-350 Super Duty
Step-by-step DIY guide with tools, parts list, safety tips, and torque specs for caliper bolts and lug nuts for 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022
🔧 F-350 Super Duty - Front Brake Pad Replacement
You’ll remove the front wheels, swing the front brake calipers out of the way, swap in new pads and hardware, then torque everything back to spec. This restores stopping power and prevents rotor damage when pads get thin.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours
Assumption: factory-style Super Duty front calipers; torque specs match typical 2011–2016.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Work on level ground and chock the rear wheels before lifting the front.
- 🛑 Support the truck with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
- 🛑 Brakes make dust—wear safety glasses and avoid blowing dust with compressed air.
- 🛑 Don’t let the caliper (the clamp that squeezes the rotor) hang by the brake hose—support it.
- 🛑 Keep grease and brake fluid off pad friction surfaces and rotors.
- 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
- Front brake pad hardware kit (abutment clips) - Qty: 1
- Silicone brake caliper grease - Qty: 1
- Brake fluid (DOT 3) - Qty: 1 bottle
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
- 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind both rear tires.
- 🧴 Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir; fluid may rise when you compress pistons. Do not overflow the reservoir.
- 🧰 Set out your torque wrench (a tool that tightens bolts to an exact spec) for reassembly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen lug nuts (before lifting)
- Use a 21mm socket with a 1/2" breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about 1/2 turn.
Step 2: Lift and support the front
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of the truck at a safe lift point.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the frame and lower the truck onto the stands.
- Give the truck a firm push to confirm it’s stable before you remove the wheel.
Step 3: Remove the front wheels
- Use a 21mm socket with a 1/2" drive ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and set them aside.
Step 4: Remove the caliper slide-pin bolts
- Turn the steering for access if needed.
- Use a 13mm socket with a 1/2" drive ratchet to remove the two caliper slide-pin bolts.
- Lift the caliper (the clamp over the rotor) off the bracket.
- Support the caliper with a bungee cord so the brake hose is not stretched.
Step 5: Remove old pads and hardware
- Pull the inner and outer brake pads out of the bracket by hand. If they’re stuck, use a flathead screwdriver gently.
- Remove the stainless abutment clips (the pad “tracks” in the bracket) from the caliper bracket.
Step 6: Compress the caliper pistons
- Check the brake fluid reservoir level under the hood before compressing.
- Place an old pad against the pistons, then use a 6" C-clamp to slowly press the pistons fully back into the caliper.
- Go slow to avoid spilling fluid.
Step 7: Clean and prep the bracket
- Use brake parts cleaner spray to clean the bracket pad-contact areas and rotor face.
- Use a wire brush to remove rust where the abutment clips sit.
- Install the new abutment clips from the hardware kit.
Step 8: Install the new pads
- Apply a thin film of silicone brake caliper grease where the pad ears touch the abutment clips (do not get grease on the pad friction material).
- Slide the new inner and outer pads into the bracket until they sit flat.
Step 9: Reinstall the caliper and torque bolts
- Set the caliper back over the new pads.
- Install the slide-pin bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the slide-pin bolts: Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts
- Reinstall both front wheels and thread lug nuts on by hand.
- Lower the truck off the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Use a torque wrench with a 21mm socket to tighten lug nuts in a star pattern: Torque to 224 Nm (165 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Restore pedal feel
- With the engine OFF, press the brake pedal slowly 10–15 times until it feels firm. This seats the pads against the rotors.
- Check the brake fluid reservoir level and top off with DOT 3 only if needed.
✅ After Repair
- 🧪 Start the engine and confirm the brake pedal remains firm.
- 🛣️ Test at low speed first (5–15 mph) in a safe area; confirm no pulling, grinding, or warning lights.
- 🔥 Bed-in the pads: make 6–10 smooth stops from ~30 mph down to ~5 mph, letting brakes cool a bit between stops. Avoid hard stops for 200 miles.
- 🔍 Recheck lug nut torque after 50–100 miles: 224 Nm (165 ft-lbs).
💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: ₹9,000–₹18,000 (parts + labor)
