🔧 1500 - Front Brake Pad Replacement

Replacing the front brake pads restores safe stopping power and prevents rotor damage when pads get thin. On your 1500, you’ll remove the front caliper, swap the pads/hardware, compress the caliper piston, and torque everything back correctly.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours

Assumption: Stock front brakes (no aftermarket big-brake kit).

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Support the truck with jack stands; never rely on a jack.
  • 🔥 Brakes get extremely hot; let everything cool before touching.
  • 🧴 Brake dust is harmful; use brake cleaner, not compressed air.
  • 🧯 Don’t press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for front pads.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Lug wrench or 22mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • 13mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • Breaker bar (1/2-inch drive)
  • Torque wrench (20-200 ft-lbs range)
  • C-clamp (6-inch minimum)
  • Brake caliper hanger hook
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Wire brush
  • Brake cleaner
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Front brake pad hardware kit (clips) - Qty: 1
  • Brake caliper grease (silicone brake lubricant) - Qty: 1
  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1
  • Brake fluid (DOT 3) - Qty: 1 bottle

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
  • 🔧 Crack the front lug nuts loose 1/2 turn using a 22mm socket before lifting.
  • 🧪 Pop the hood and check the brake fluid level; it may rise when you compress the piston.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and remove the front wheel

  • Lift the front corner using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the proper jack point.
  • Set the truck onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and give it a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable.
  • Remove the lug nuts using a lug wrench or 22mm socket and remove the wheel.

Step 2: Locate the caliper and remove the caliper bolts

  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself room to work (turn left for right side, right for left side).
  • Remove the two caliper guide pin bolts using a 13mm socket and ratchet.
  • If bolts are tight, use a breaker bar (1/2-inch drive) carefully.
  • Guide pins are the sliding bolts the caliper moves on.

Step 3: Support the caliper (do not let it hang)

  • Lift the caliper off the bracket.
  • Hang it from the suspension spring using a brake caliper hanger hook.
  • Do not stretch or twist the brake hose.

Step 4: Remove old pads and hardware clips

  • Slide the old pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Remove the stainless hardware clips from the bracket using a flathead screwdriver.
  • Clean the bracket pad lands (where clips sit) using a wire brush, then spray with brake cleaner.

Step 5: Compress the caliper piston

  • Place one old pad against the piston face to protect it.
  • Use a C-clamp (6-inch minimum) to slowly press the piston back into the caliper.
  • Go slowly and watch the brake fluid reservoir so it doesn’t overflow.
  • The piston is the round “plunger” inside the caliper.

Step 6: Install new hardware clips and new pads

  • Install the new hardware clips into the bracket by hand (they should snap/seat flat).
  • Apply a thin film of brake caliper grease (silicone brake lubricant) where the pad ears contact the clips.
  • Slide the new pads into the bracket in the same positions as the originals.
  • Do not get grease on pad friction material or the rotor.

Step 7: Reinstall the caliper and torque fasteners

  • Lower the caliper over the new pads.
  • Install the caliper guide pin bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading, then tighten using a 13mm socket.
  • Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench.
  • If you removed the caliper bracket (only needed for rotor replacement), reinstall bracket bolts using an 18mm socket and torque wrench.
  • Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs) for the bracket-to-knuckle bolts.

Step 8: Reinstall the wheel and torque lug nuts

  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-thread the lug nuts.
  • Lower the truck until the tire just touches the ground and won’t spin.
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench.
  • Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Repeat on the other front wheel

  • Repeat Steps 1-8 on the other side.
  • Replace pads on both sides as a set.

âś… After Repair

  • 🦶 Pump the brake pedal 10-15 times before driving until the pedal feels firm.
  • 🧪 Re-check brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 if needed.
  • 🔍 Check for leaks and make sure the brake hose isn’t twisted.
  • 🛣️ Bed-in the pads: make 6-10 moderate stops from 30-40 mph with cool-down time between stops.
  • đź‘‚ Listen for grinding/squealing; a light smell is normal for the first drive.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$450 (parts + labor)
