  • Support the caliper so the brake hose is not stretched.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Shift into Park.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts before lifting.
  • Replace pads in pairs on both front wheels.
  • Check the rotors for deep grooves, cracks, or heavy rust.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the front and remove the wheels

  • Use the 21mm socket and breaker bar to loosen the lug nuts before lifting.
  • Raise the front with the floor jack and support it with jack stands.
  • Remove the lug nuts and front wheels.
  • Keep the lug nuts together so none are lost.

Step 2: Remove the caliper

  • Use the 13mm socket to remove the caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket.
  • Hang the caliper with a brake caliper hanger or sturdy wire.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.

Step 3: Remove the caliper bracket and old pads

  • Use the 15mm socket to remove the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the bracket from the steering knuckle.
  • Remove the old brake pads and any pad hardware.
  • If a pad is stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully.

Step 4: Clean and inspect the brake hardware

  • Use brake cleaner and a wire brush to clean the bracket and pad contact points.
  • Inspect the rotor surface for scoring or cracks.
  • Check that the slide pins move smoothly.
  • Apply a light coat of brake caliper lubricant to the pad contact points and slide hardware.

Step 5: Compress the caliper piston

  • Use the C-clamp to slowly push the piston back into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing.
  • Stop if the fluid level gets too high.
  • Go slow to protect the seal.

Step 6: Install the new pads and bracket

  • Install the new hardware clips into the bracket.
  • Apply a thin layer of brake caliper lubricant to the pad ears where they contact the hardware.
  • Install the new front brake pads into the bracket.
  • Reinstall the bracket with the 15mm socket.
  • Torque to 250 Nm (184 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reinstall the caliper

  • Set the caliper back over the new pads.
  • Install the slide pin bolts with the 13mm socket.
  • Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
  • Confirm the caliper slides freely and the hose is not twisted.

Step 8: Reinstall the wheels and lower the truck

  • Put the wheels back on and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle with the floor jack.
  • Use the 21mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 204 Nm (150 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Press the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
  • Check the brake fluid level.
  • Test braking at low speed in a safe area.
  • Listen for rubbing, clicking, or squealing.
  • Recheck lug nut torque after a short drive.
  • New pads need a short break-in period.
