How to Replace Front Brake Pads on a 2010-2017 Chevrolet Equinox (DIY Guide)
Step-by-step instructions with required tools, parts, safety tips, and torque specs for 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017
🔧 Equinox - Front Brake Pad Replacement
You’ll remove the front wheels, swing the front brake calipers out of the way, replace the pads (and hardware clips), then compress the caliper pistons so everything fits back together. This restores braking performance and prevents pad-to-rotor metal contact.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Support the Equinox with jack stands before working under/around the wheels.
- 🛑 Do not press the brake pedal while a caliper is off the rotor.
- 🛑 Brake dust is harmful—use brake cleaner, not compressed air.
- 🛑 Watch the brake fluid level when compressing pistons; fluid can overflow.
- 🛑 If you feel unsure at any point, stop and ask before forcing parts.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🧰 Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🧰 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- 🧰 Pop the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir; leave the cap on but be ready to check the level during piston compression.
- 🧰 Turn the steering wheel to give more room (left side: wheel turned right; right side: wheel turned left).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen lug nuts
- Use a 19mm socket and breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts 1/2 turn (do not remove yet).
Step 2: Lift and support the front
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of the Equinox at the proper jacking point.
- Set it down onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and confirm it’s stable with a gentle shake.
- Remove the wheels using the 19mm socket.
Step 3: Locate the caliper and remove the caliper bolts
- Find the brake caliper (the part that squeezes the rotor) and the two rear caliper guide pin bolts.
- Use a 13mm socket and ratchet to remove the two caliper guide pin bolts.
- Tip: Turn the steering for better access.
Step 4: Swing the caliper up and support it
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry if needed, then lift the caliper off the bracket.
- Hang the caliper from the strut spring using a bungee cord.
- Never let the caliper hang by the brake hose.
Step 5: Remove the old pads and hardware clips
- Pull the old inner and outer pads out by hand.
- Remove the stainless hardware clips (abutment clips) from the caliper bracket by hand or with the flat-blade screwdriver.
Step 6: Clean the bracket pad lands
- Spray the bracket pad contact areas with brake parts cleaner.
- Use a wire brush to clean rust where the hardware clips sit.
- Wipe with shop rags until clean and dry.
Step 7: Install new hardware clips and grease contact points
- Snap the new clips from the hardware kit into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Apply a very thin film of brake caliper grease (silicone) on the clip “rails” where the pads slide.
- Do not get grease on the pad friction material or rotor.
Step 8: Compress the caliper piston
- Place one old pad against the piston face, then use a C-clamp (6-inch minimum) to slowly press the piston fully back into the caliper.
- Check the brake fluid reservoir under the hood as you compress; remove some fluid only if it’s about to overflow (use shop rags to protect painted surfaces).
- Tip: Go slow to avoid damaging seals.
Step 9: Install the new pads
- Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand.
- If your pads include a wear indicator, it typically goes on the inner pad (match the old pad placement).
Step 10: Reinstall the caliper and torque bolts
- Lower the caliper back over the new pads.
- Install the caliper guide pin bolts using a 13mm socket and ratchet, then tighten with a torque wrench.
- Torque to 42 Nm (31 ft-lbs) for the caliper guide pin bolts.
Step 11: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts
- Reinstall the wheels and snug the lug nuts using the 19mm socket.
- Lower the Equinox off the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench.
- Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs) for the lug nuts.
Step 12: Repeat on the other front wheel
- Repeat Steps 3–11 on the other side.
- Replace pads on both sides as a pair.
âś… After Repair
- 🧪 Pump the brake pedal 10–15 times until it feels firm before driving.
- 🧪 Check brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
- 🧪 Test at low speed first; confirm no pulling, grinding, or warning lights.
- 🧪 Bed-in (break-in) the pads: make 6–10 moderate stops from ~40 mph to 10 mph, allowing short cool-down between stops.
