🔧 Highlander - Front Brake Pad Replacement
You’ll remove the front caliper, swap the old pads for new ones, and compress the caliper piston so everything fits back together. This restores safe stopping power and prevents rotor damage when pads are worn thin.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on level ground and use jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Brakes can be hot; let everything cool before touching calipers/rotors.
- ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while the caliper is off the rotor.
- ⚠️ Brake dust is harmful—use brake cleaner, not compressed air.
- ⚠️ Keep brake fluid off paint; it can damage the finish.
- ⚠️ If your Highlander has an electronic parking brake switch, keep ignition OFF during the job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Highlander on a flat surface and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Crack the front lug nuts loose with a 21mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
- Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir; you’ll re-check the level after pushing the pistons back.
- If your Highlander has an electronic parking brake switch (EPB), keep the ignition OFF and do not activate EPB during the job.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift the front and remove the wheel
- Use a floor jack to lift the front at the proper jacking point, then support with jack stands.
- Remove the lug nuts using a 21mm socket and ratchet, then remove the wheel.
Step 2: Locate the caliper and caliper bracket
- The caliper is the part that squeezes the pads; the caliper bracket is the fixed mount the pads slide in.
- Turn the steering wheel toward the side you’re working on to create more room.
Step 3: Remove the caliper (do not let it hang)
- Remove the two caliper slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet.
- Lift the caliper off the rotor. If it’s stuck, use a flat trim/pry tool gently to help it move.
- Hang the caliper from the suspension with a bungee cord so the brake hose isn’t strained.
Step 4: Remove old pads and hardware
- Slide the old pads out of the bracket by hand.
- Remove the pad abutment clips (the thin metal “rails”) from the bracket by hand or with a flat trim/pry tool.
- Spray the bracket pad lands with brake parts cleaner spray and scrub with a wire brush until clean.
- Clean metal helps pads slide smoothly.
Step 5: Compress the caliper piston
- Position one old pad against the piston face, then use a C-clamp (6-inch minimum) to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
- Go slowly and watch the brake fluid reservoir under the hood so it doesn’t overflow.
Step 6: Install new hardware and new pads
- Install the new abutment clips from the front pad hardware kit into the bracket by hand (they should snap/seat into place).
- Apply a thin film of brake caliper grease (silicone) where the pad ears touch the clips (metal-to-metal contact points only).
- Install the new pads into the bracket by hand. Make sure they move freely.
Step 7: Reinstall the caliper and torque fasteners
- Lower the caliper back over the new pads.
- Install the caliper slide pin bolts by hand first, then tighten using a 14mm socket and torque wrench.
- Torque to 34 N·m (25 ft-lb) (caliper slide pin bolts).
- If you removed the caliper bracket (only if needed for cleaning or rotor service), reinstall it using a 17mm socket and torque wrench.
- Torque to 123 N·m (91 ft-lb) (caliper bracket bolts).
- If your manual lists different specs, follow it.
Step 8: Reinstall the wheel and torque lug nuts
- Reinstall the wheel and hand-thread the lug nuts.
- Lower your Highlander off the stands using the floor jack.
- Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a 21mm socket and torque wrench.
- Torque to 103 N·m (76 ft-lb) (lug nuts).
Step 9: Repeat on the other front wheel
- Repeat Steps 1–8 for the other front side.
- Always replace pads on both front wheels.
✅ After Repair
- With the vehicle on the ground, press the brake pedal slowly 10–15 times until it feels firm (this seats the pistons).
- Check brake fluid level at the reservoir and top off only if needed.
- Start your Highlander and do a low-speed test in a safe area.
- Pad bed-in (break-in): make 6–10 gentle stops from ~30 mph to 5 mph, allowing short cool-down between stops.
- Recheck for any unusual noises and verify the wheel lug torque after a short drive.
