🔧 Tundra - Front Brake Pad Replacement

On your Tundra, the front pads sit inside a fixed (multi-piston) front caliper and are held in by retaining pins and a spring clip. Replacing worn pads restores stopping power and prevents rotor damage from metal-to-metal contact.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and chock the rear wheels before lifting the front.
  • ⚠️ Never get under a truck supported only by a jack—use jack stands.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust is harmful—avoid blowing it with air; use brake cleaner.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal with pads removed; pistons can pop out.
  • ⚠️ Watch brake fluid level when compressing pistons; it can overflow.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 1/2" drive torque wrench (50-200 ft-lbs range)
  • Large C-clamp (6" minimum)
  • Brake pad spreader tool (specialty)
  • Pin punch set (4mm-6mm)
  • Small hammer
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Flat trim tool
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Shop rags
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Front brake pad hardware kit - Qty: 1
  • Brake caliper grease (silicone) - Qty: 1
  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock both rear wheels using wheel chocks.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts 1/2 turn with a 21mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
  • Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir level; plan for it to rise when pistons are pushed back.
  • “Hardware” = the pins/springs that hold pads in.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front

  • Lift the front using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the proper front jacking point.
  • Set the truck onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and give it a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable.

Step 2: Remove the front wheels

  • Remove the lug nuts with a 21mm socket and take both front wheels off.
  • Set wheels aside under the frame as an extra safety backup.

Step 3: Locate the pad retaining pins and spring clip

  • Look at the outside face of the front caliper: you’ll see two straight retaining pins and an anti-rattle spring clip.
  • Spray the pin area with brake cleaner spray and wipe with shop rags.

Step 4: Remove the retaining pins

  • Use a pin punch set (4mm-6mm) and small hammer to tap the two pins out.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to fully pull the pins free once they’re loose.
  • Tap straight to avoid bending pins.

Step 5: Remove the anti-rattle spring clip

  • Remove the spring clip once the pins are out.
  • If it’s stuck, gently pry it with a flat trim tool (don’t gouge the caliper).

Step 6: Retract the caliper pistons

  • Place an old pad against the pistons and use a large C-clamp (6" minimum) or brake pad spreader tool (specialty) to push the pistons back slowly.
  • Do this evenly so the pistons go back straight.
  • Keep an eye on the brake fluid reservoir while compressing; remove a little fluid if it’s about to overflow.
  • Slow pressure prevents seal damage.

Step 7: Remove the old brake pads

  • Slide the inner and outer pads out of the caliper by hand.
  • If they’re tight, wiggle them out and use a flat trim tool gently as needed.

Step 8: Clean and inspect

  • Clean the pad contact areas with brake cleaner spray and shop rags.
  • Quick checks: rotors should be smooth and not deeply grooved; caliper dust boots should not be torn.

Step 9: Install new pad hardware and grease contact points

  • Install the new hardware from the front brake pad hardware kit (if your kit includes new pad abutment pieces, replace them one side at a time).
  • Apply a thin film of brake caliper grease (silicone) to pad ears/contact points where they slide in the caliper (avoid pad friction material and rotor).
  • Grease only metal-to-metal contact points.

Step 10: Install the new brake pads

  • Slide the new inner and outer pads into the caliper by hand.
  • Confirm the pads sit flat and move smoothly in their tracks.

Step 11: Reinstall the anti-rattle spring clip and retaining pins

  • Position the spring clip back in place.
  • Push the retaining pins through by hand, then tap them fully seated using a pin punch set (4mm-6mm) and small hammer.
  • Confirm both pins are fully seated and the spring clip is secure.

Step 12: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Reinstall the wheels and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower the truck off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern with a 1/2" drive torque wrench (50-200 ft-lbs range): Torque to 203 Nm (150 ft-lbs).

âś… After Repair

  • Pump the brake pedal 10-20 times before driving until the pedal feels firm (this seats the pads against the rotors).
  • Recheck brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
  • Test at low speed first, then gradually build up to normal braking.
  • Bed-in the pads: do 6-10 moderate stops from ~40 mph down to ~10 mph, with cooling time between stops (don’t hold the brake pedal at a complete stop right after hard braking).
  • Listen for abnormal grinding or pulling; if present, stop and recheck pad seating and pin/spring installation.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
