🔧 Sierra 1500 - Front Brake Pad Replacement

You’ll remove the front wheels, swing the brake calipers out of the way, swap the old pads for new ones, then compress the caliper piston so everything fits back together. This is routine maintenance, but it’s safety-critical—take your time and keep things clean.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support the truck with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack.
  • ⚠️ Don’t press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust is harmful—use brake cleaner, not compressed air.
  • ⚠️ Brake parts can be hot; let them cool before starting.
  • ⚠️ Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose; support it with a hook/strap.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for front pads on your Sierra 1500.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 22mm socket
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 1/2" drive torque wrench (50-200 ft-lbs range)
  • 13mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • Ratchet (1/2" drive)
  • Socket extension (3"-6")
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • C-clamp (6" minimum)
  • Brake caliper hook
  • Wire brush
  • Small bungee cord
  • Drain pan
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

  • Front brake pad hardware kit (abutment clips) - Qty: 1
  • Brake parts cleaner spray - Qty: 1
  • High-temperature silicone brake grease - Qty: 1
  • Brake fluid (DOT 3) - Qty: 1 bottle

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🧱 Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🪵 Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
  • 🛞 Crack the front lug nuts loose 1/2 turn using a 22mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
  • 🧰 Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir; you’ll watch the level when compressing pistons so it doesn’t overflow.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front end

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Lift the front using a floor jack at the front crossmember, then set the frame on jack stands.
  • Remove both front wheels using a 22mm socket and breaker bar.

Step 2: Turn the steering for access

  • Turn the steering wheel so the caliper you’re working on faces outward (gives you more room).

Step 3: Remove the caliper (keep the hose safe)

  • Remove the two caliper slide pin bolts using a 13mm socket and ratchet.
  • Carefully lift the caliper off the bracket.
  • Hang the caliper using a brake caliper hook or bungee cord so the hose is not stretched.
  • Never let the caliper dangle by the hose.

Step 4: Remove the old pads and hardware

  • Slide the old pads out of the caliper bracket by hand; use a flathead screwdriver gently if they’re stuck.
  • Remove the pad abutment clips (the thin metal “hardware” the pads ride on).
  • Clean the bracket pad lands (where clips sit) using brake cleaner spray and a wire brush.
  • Clean metal helps prevent squeaks and sticking.

Step 5: Compress the caliper piston

  • A C-clamp is a screw clamp that slowly pushes the piston back in.
  • Place the old inner pad against the piston face, then use the C-clamp to slowly compress the piston fully into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing; remove fluid with a towel if it nears the top.

Step 6: Install new hardware clips and grease contact points

  • Install the new abutment clips from the hardware kit onto the bracket.
  • Apply a thin film of high-temperature silicone brake grease where the pad “ears” touch the clips.
  • Do not get grease on the pad friction material or the rotor.

Step 7: Install the new brake pads

  • Slide the new pads into the bracket by hand.
  • If one pad has a wear indicator (“squealer”), install it in the same position as the old set came off.

Step 8: Reinstall the caliper and torque fasteners

  • Set the caliper back over the new pads.
  • Reinstall the caliper slide pin bolts using a 13mm socket and ratchet, then tighten with a torque wrench:
  • 2007 Sierra 1500 Classic (GMT800): Torque caliper slide pin bolts to 31 Nm (23 ft-lbs)
  • 2007 Sierra 1500 New Body (GMT900): Torque caliper slide pin bolts to 38 Nm (28 ft-lbs)

Step 9: (If removed) Reinstall the caliper bracket and torque bracket bolts

  • If you had to remove the bracket for access, reinstall it using an 18mm socket, ratchet, and extension.
  • The caliper bracket is the heavy mount the pads sit in.
  • Tighten the bracket bolts with a torque wrench:
  • 2007 Sierra 1500 Classic (GMT800): Torque caliper bracket bolts to 200 Nm (148 ft-lbs)
  • 2007 Sierra 1500 New Body (GMT900): Torque caliper bracket bolts to 221 Nm (163 ft-lbs)

Step 10: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Reinstall the wheels and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower the truck off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Torque lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench:
  • Torque lug nuts to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs)

✅ After Repair

  • 🦶 Before moving the truck, pump the brake pedal 8–12 times until it feels firm.
  • 🧪 Check brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 if needed.
  • 🔍 With the engine running, hold the brake pedal for 30 seconds; it should not slowly sink.
  • 🛣️ Bed-in (break-in) the pads: make 6–10 moderate stops from 30–40 mph, allowing 30–60 seconds between stops for cooling.
  • 🧯 Check for leaks and abnormal smells after the first short drive.
