🔧 Patriot - Front Brake Pad Replacement

You’ll be removing the front wheels, swinging the front calipers up, swapping the pads, and compressing the caliper pistons so everything fits back together. This restores safe braking and prevents rotor damage when pads are worn thin.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours

Assumption: your Patriot has the standard single-piston floating front calipers.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a flat surface and support the SUV with jack stands before going under or pulling on parts.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while a caliper is off the rotor.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust is harmful—use brake cleaner, not compressed air.
  • ⚠️ Keep brake fluid off paint; it can damage finishes.
  • ⚠️ Watch brake fluid level when compressing pistons; remove excess if it starts to overflow.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 19mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • Torque wrench (20-200 ft-lbs range)
  • 13mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • C-clamp (6" or larger)
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Bungee cord
  • Wire brush
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Front brake hardware kit (abutment clips) - Qty: 1
  • Brake caliper grease (silicone-based) - Qty: 1
  • Brake fluid (DOT 3) - Qty: 1 bottle

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, put the transmission in 1st gear, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
  • Crack the front lug nuts loose 1/2 turn using a 19mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
  • Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir; make sure it’s not overfilled.
  • A C-clamp is a screw clamp used to slowly push the caliper piston back in.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front end

  • Lift the front with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the proper front jacking point.
  • Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and gently shake to confirm stability.

Step 2: Remove the front wheels

  • Remove the lug nuts using a 19mm socket and ratchet, then remove both front wheels.

Step 3: Locate the caliper and remove the caliper slide bolts

  • Turn the steering so you can see the back of the caliper clearly.
  • Remove the two caliper slide (guide) bolts using a 13mm socket and ratchet.
  • If the slide pin spins, hold the pin flats gently with a flat-blade screwdriver while loosening.

Step 4: Swing the caliper up and support it

  • Lift the caliper off the rotor and support it with a bungee cord.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.

Step 5: Remove old pads and hardware

  • Pull the inner and outer pads out by hand.
  • Remove the old abutment clips (the thin metal clips the pads slide on) from the bracket.
  • Clean the bracket pad “shelves” with brake cleaner spray and a wire brush.

Step 6: Compress the caliper piston

  • Place the old inner pad against the piston face.
  • Use a C-clamp (6" or larger) to slowly press the piston fully back into the caliper.
  • Check the brake fluid reservoir while compressing; remove a little fluid if it’s close to overflowing.
  • Go slow to avoid damaging seals.

Step 7: Install new hardware and lubricate correctly

  • Install the new abutment clips from the front brake hardware kit onto the bracket.
  • Apply a thin film of brake caliper grease (silicone-based) where the pad ears contact the clips.
  • Do not get grease on the pad friction material or the rotor.

Step 8: Install the new pads

  • Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket.
  • If your inner pad has a wear indicator, it typically goes on the inner pad (orientation can vary by pad design).

Step 9: Reinstall the caliper

  • Lower the caliper over the new pads/rotor.
  • Install and tighten the caliper slide bolts using a 13mm socket.
  • Torque to 35 N·m (26 ft-lbs)

Step 10: If you removed the caliper bracket (only if needed)

  • If you had to remove the bracket for any reason, reinstall bracket bolts using an 18mm socket.
  • Torque to 125 N·m (92 ft-lbs)

Step 11: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Reinstall the wheels and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower until the tires just touch the ground and torque lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench (20-200 ft-lbs range).
  • Torque to 135 N·m (100 ft-lbs)

Step 12: Pump the brake pedal

  • Before driving, pump the brake pedal slowly 8-15 times until it feels firm.
  • This seats the pads against the rotors after piston compression.

✅ After Repair

  • Check brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 if needed.
  • With the engine running, press the brake pedal firmly and confirm it stays solid (no sinking).
  • Do a slow test drive and verify no pulling, grinding, or warning lights.
  • Bed-in the pads: make 6-10 moderate stops from ~30 mph to ~5 mph, allowing short cool-down between stops.
  • Re-check lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using a torque wrench (20-200 ft-lbs range).

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$450 (parts + labor)
