How to Replace Front Brake Pads on a 2007-2016 Honda CR-V (DIY Guide)
Step-by-step instructions with required tools, parts list, safety tips, and torque specs for 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016
🔧 CR-V - Front Brake Pad Replacement
You’ll remove the front wheels, swing the front brake calipers up, swap the old pads for new ones, then compress the caliper piston so everything fits back together. This restores safe stopping and prevents metal-to-metal rotor damage when pads are worn.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧯 Support your CR-V on jack stands—never rely on a floor jack alone.
- ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while a caliper is off the rotor (the piston can pop out).
- 🔥 Brakes can be very hot—let them cool before starting.
- 🧪 Brake fluid damages paint—wipe spills immediately and keep the reservoir cap on except when checking level.
- 🧵 Do not let the caliper hang by the hose—support it with a bungee cord.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
- Front brake pad hardware kit (abutment clips) - Qty: 1
- Brake lubricant (silicone-based) - Qty: 1
- Brake cleaner spray - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Pop the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. You’ll check the level as you compress the pistons (fluid can rise).
- Tip: Take a photo of pad/clip layout first.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the front lug nuts
- Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar to loosen (do not remove) the lug nuts about 1/2 turn.
Step 2: Raise and support the front end
- Lift the front with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the front center jacking point.
- Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) at the front support points.
- Give the CR-V a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable.
Step 3: Remove the front wheels
- Remove lug nuts using a 21mm socket and 1/2" drive breaker bar (or ratchet).
- Remove both front wheels and set them aside.
Step 4: Locate the caliper and remove the lower slide-pin bolt
- Turn the steering wheel for easier access (left for right side, right for left side).
- On the back of the caliper, remove the lower caliper slide-pin bolt using a 12mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Tip: Only remove one slide bolt to swing caliper up.
Step 5: Swing the caliper up and support it
- Carefully pivot the caliper upward (like opening a hinge).
- Support the caliper with a bungee cord so the brake hose isn’t stretched.
- Bungee cord = an elastic cord with hooks used to hold the caliper safely.
Step 6: Remove the old pads and hardware clips
- Slide the old inner and outer pads out by hand. Use a flathead screwdriver gently if they’re stuck.
- Remove the stainless hardware clips (abutment clips) from the caliper bracket using a flathead screwdriver or needle-nose pliers.
Step 7: Clean the bracket pad contact points
- Spray the bracket areas with brake cleaner spray.
- Lightly clean rust buildup where the clips sit using a wire brush.
- Wipe dry with shop rags.
Step 8: Install new hardware clips and lubricate correctly
- Snap the new hardware clips into the caliper bracket by hand (match the old clip positions).
- Apply a thin film of brake lubricant (silicone-based) on the clip “rails” where the pad ears slide.
- Do not get lubricant on pad friction material or rotor.
Step 9: Compress the caliper piston
- Before compressing, check the brake fluid reservoir level under the hood. If it’s near MAX, be prepared for it to rise.
- Position the old inner pad against the piston face.
- Use a large C-clamp (6" minimum) to slowly press the piston fully back into the caliper.
- C-clamp = a screw clamp that pushes the piston back in evenly.
Step 10: Install the new brake pads
- Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket (they should slide smoothly on the clips).
- If your pad set includes wear indicators, install them in the same position as the originals.
Step 11: Swing the caliper back down and tighten the slide-pin bolt
- Pivot the caliper back over the new pads.
- Reinstall the lower slide-pin bolt using a 12mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Tighten with a 3/8" drive torque wrench: Torque to 34 N·m (25 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts
- Put wheels back on and hand-thread lug nuts.
- Lower the CR-V off the jack stands using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Torque lug nuts in a star pattern using a 1/2" drive torque wrench: Torque to 108 N·m (80 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Pump the brake pedal and recheck fluid level
- With the engine off, press the brake pedal slowly 10–15 times until it feels firm.
- Check brake fluid level at the reservoir and adjust to the proper level if needed.
- Inspect both calipers for any signs of leakage.
✅ After Repair
- Do a slow test drive in a safe area. Confirm the pedal feels normal and the CR-V stops straight.
- Listen for abnormal grinding or constant scraping.
- Recheck lug nut torque after 25–50 miles using a 1/2" drive torque wrench: Torque to 108 N·m (80 ft-lbs).
- If pads are new, do gentle stops for the first 150–200 miles to help them bed-in evenly.
