🔧 Front Brake Pads - Replacement
Your RAV4’s front pads wear faster than the rears, so replacing them restores stopping power and helps prevent rotor damage. This job is straightforward if the caliper slides freely and the rotor surface is still in good shape.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a flat surface and chock the rear wheels before lifting the vehicle.
- Use jack stands. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
- Brake dust can be harmful. Do not blow it off with compressed air.
- Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
- If the brake fluid reservoir is full, watch for overflow when compressing the caliper piston.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Leave the transmission in Park.
- Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
- For a first-time job, replace pads on both front wheels together.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the front wheel nuts
- Use a 21mm socket and ratchet to loosen the front wheel nuts about 1/2 turn.
- Do not remove them yet.
Step 2: Lift and support the front of the vehicle
- Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the proper front jacking point.
- Place jack stands under the front support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
- Remove the front wheel nuts and wheels.
Step 3: Remove the caliper
- Locate the caliper guide pin bolts on the back side of the caliper.
- Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the guide pin bolts.
- Carefully lift the caliper off the rotor.
- Support the caliper with a bungee cord. Do not let it hang by the brake hose.
Step 4: Remove the old brake pads and hardware
- Pull the inner and outer brake pads out of the bracket.
- Remove the pad clips and any worn hardware.
- Use a flat blade screwdriver if the pads are stuck.
- Keep track of inner vs outer pad position.
Step 5: Inspect and clean the bracket
- Use a wire brush to clean rust from the pad contact points.
- Spray the bracket area with brake cleaner and let it dry.
- Install the new hardware clips from the pad set if included.
Step 6: Compress the caliper piston
- Use a C-clamp to slowly push the caliper piston back into the bore.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing the piston.
- Go slow to avoid seal damage.
Step 7: Install the new brake pads
- Apply the pads into the bracket in the same orientation as the originals.
- Install any included shims or wear indicators exactly as removed.
- Make sure the pads slide freely in the hardware.
Step 8: Reinstall the caliper
- Lower the caliper over the new pads and rotor.
- Install the guide pin bolts by hand first.
- Use a 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the guide pin bolts to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reinstall the wheel
- Put the wheel back on and install the lug nuts by hand.
- Lower the vehicle enough so the tire just touches the ground.
- Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs) in a star pattern.
Step 10: Repeat on the other front wheel
- Replace the pads on the opposite side using the same steps.
- Replace both sides together for even braking.
✅ After Repair
- Before driving, pump the brake pedal until it feels firm.
- Check the brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
- Test the brakes at low speed in a safe area.
- Listen for rubbing or clicking that could mean a pad is not seated correctly.
- For the first 200 miles, avoid hard stops unless needed for safety.
