🔧 Front Brake Pads - Replacement

The front pads on your RAV4 are a straightforward brake service. You’ll remove the front caliper, replace the pads, clean the contact points, and then reassemble everything to the correct torque so the brakes work smoothly and safely.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a level surface and chock the rear wheels before lifting the vehicle.
  • Use jack stands; never rely on the floor jack alone.
  • Brake parts may be hot if the vehicle was recently driven.
  • Do not press the brake pedal with the caliper removed.
  • Support the caliper so the brake hose is not stretched or twisted.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 21mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Breaker bar
  • Torque wrench
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • C-clamp or brake caliper piston tool
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Wire brush
  • Brake cleaner
  • Shop rags
  • Bungee cord or mechanic’s wire
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Brake grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and engage the parking brake.
  • Leave the transmission in Park.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting.
  • If the brake fluid reservoir is already full, check it before pushing the caliper piston back. Fluid may rise.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and remove the wheel

  • Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts before lifting.
  • Lift the front of the vehicle with a floor jack and support it with jack stands.
  • Remove the lug nuts and wheel.
  • Keep the nuts in a clean spot.

Step 2: Remove the caliper

  • Use a 14mm socket to remove the caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Carefully lift the caliper off the bracket.
  • Hang the caliper with a bungee cord or mechanic’s wire.
  • Never let the caliper dangle.

Step 3: Remove the old pads and hardware

  • Slide the old brake pads out of the bracket.
  • Remove the pad clips and anti-rattle hardware from the bracket.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver if the pads are stuck.

Step 4: Inspect and clean the brake bracket

  • Use a wire brush and brake cleaner to clean rust and dirt from the pad contact points.
  • Check the rotor surface for deep grooves, cracks, or heavy rust.
  • Replace the rotor if it is damaged or below spec.

Step 5: Retract the caliper piston

  • Place one of the old pads against the piston.
  • Use a C-clamp or brake caliper piston tool to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing the piston.
  • Push slowly to avoid seal damage.

Step 6: Install the new pad hardware and pads

  • Install the new hardware clips from the pad kit.
  • Apply a thin layer of brake grease to the pad ears and contact points only.
  • Install the new pads in the bracket.
  • Make sure the pads move freely in the clips.

Step 7: Reinstall the caliper

  • Set the caliper back over the new pads.
  • Use a 14mm socket to install the slide pin bolts.
  • Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall the wheel

  • Put the wheel back on and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  • Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Seat the pads

  • Before moving the vehicle, pump the brake pedal slowly until it feels firm.
  • Check the brake fluid level and top off if needed.
  • Test the brakes at low speed in a safe area.

âś… After Repair

  • Confirm the brake pedal feels firm before driving.
  • Check for brake fluid leaks around the caliper.
  • Listen for unusual noises during the first few stops.
  • New pads need a short break-in period, so avoid hard stops for the first 200 miles when possible.
