🔧 Front Brake Pads - Pad Replacement
Replacing the front brake pads on your RAV4 means removing the front caliper, swapping the pads, and then compressing the caliper piston so the new pads fit correctly. This is a straightforward job, but you need to work carefully because the brake system is a safety-critical part of the vehicle.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a flat, level surface and chock the rear wheels.
- Keep the hybrid system fully off. Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
- Use jack stands. Never rely on the floor jack alone.
- Brake dust may be present. Do not blow it off with compressed air.
- Use only brake cleaner and a clean rag on brake parts.
- If the brake fluid reservoir is full, compress the piston slowly so fluid does not overflow.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Put wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
- Keep the key fob away from the vehicle so the hybrid system stays off.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen and lift the front
- Use the 21mm lug wrench or 21mm socket to loosen both front wheel lug nuts about one turn.
- Use the floor jack to lift the front of the vehicle at the proper lift point.
- Support the vehicle with jack stands.
- Remove the wheel.
Step 2: Remove the caliper
- Use the 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts.
- Lift the caliper off the bracket.
- Hang the caliper with a bungee cord or mechanics wire. Do not let it hang by the brake hose.
Step 3: Remove the old pads and hardware
- Pull the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
- Remove the pad retainers and any anti-rattle hardware.
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver if the pads are stuck.
- Use the wire brush to clean rust and dirt from the bracket contact points.
- Clean contact points help prevent brake noise.
Step 4: Compress the caliper piston
- Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir.
- Use a C-clamp or disc brake piston tool (specialty) to slowly push the piston back into the caliper bore.
- Make sure the piston goes in straight and smoothly.
- If fluid rises too high, remove a small amount before continuing.
Step 5: Install the new pads
- Apply a thin layer of brake grease to the pad ears and contact points only.
- Install the new hardware clips if included.
- Place the new pads into the bracket in the same position as the old ones.
- Make sure the inner and outer pads are installed correctly.
Step 6: Reinstall the caliper
- Slide the caliper back over the new pads.
- Use the 14mm socket and ratchet to reinstall the slide pin bolts.
- Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Reinstall the wheel
- Put the wheel back on and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
- Lower the vehicle with the floor jack.
- Use the 21mm lug wrench or 21mm socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Repeat on the other side
- Replace the pads on the opposite front wheel the same way.
- Replace pads in pairs.
✅ After Repair
- Press the brake pedal slowly several times before driving. The pedal should become firm.
- Check the brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
- Test drive at low speed first.
- Listen for scraping or clicking noises.
- For the first 200 miles, avoid hard braking unless needed.
