🔧 RAV4 - Front Brake Pad Replacement
You’ll be removing the front wheels, swinging the front brake calipers up, and swapping the old pads for new ones on both front wheels. This restores safe stopping power and helps prevent rotor damage from worn pads.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Support the RAV4 with jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
- 🛑 Brake dust is harmful—use brake cleaner, not compressed air.
- 🛑 Don’t let the caliper hang by the brake hose; it can damage the hose.
- 🛑 Keep brake fluid off paint; it can remove paint quickly.
- 🛑 If the brake fluid reservoir gets too full when compressing pistons, remove some with a suction tool.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Loosen the front lug nuts 1/2 turn with a 21mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
- Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir; keep the cap loosely set on top (don’t remove it completely unless needed).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and remove the front wheels
- Lift the front with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the front jacking point.
- Set the RAV4 down onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Remove lug nuts using a 21mm socket and ratchet (3/8"), then remove both front wheels.
Step 2: Remove the caliper bolts
- Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room on the side you’re working on.
- Remove the two caliper slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet (3/8").
- Tip: Break them loose, then spin out by hand.
Step 3: Hang the caliper safely
- Lift the caliper off the bracket (it may pivot up and off).
- Support it from the strut spring using a bungee cord.
- A bungee cord is a simple “caliper hanger” that keeps the brake hose from being stretched.
Step 4: Remove old pads and hardware
- Slide the old inner and outer pads out of the bracket by hand; use a flathead screwdriver gently if they’re stuck.
- Remove the pad hardware clips from the bracket (usually 2 clips) by hand or with a flathead screwdriver.
- Clean the pad abutment areas (where clips sit) using brake parts cleaner spray and a wire brush.
Step 5: Check slide pins (important for even braking)
- Pull the slide pins out of the bracket by hand (one at a time).
- Wipe them clean, then apply a thin coat of brake caliper slide pin grease (silicone).
- Reinsert pins and confirm they move smoothly in and out.
Step 6: Install new hardware and new pads
- Install new hardware clips onto the bracket by hand (they should snap/seat fully).
- Install the new pads into the clips by hand (match inner/outer orientation if your pad set differs).
- If your pads include shims, install them as directed with the pad set.
Step 7: Compress the caliper piston
- Place an old brake pad against the piston face.
- Use a C-clamp (6" minimum) to slowly press the piston fully back into the caliper.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing; if it’s close to overflowing, remove some fluid (use a suction tool if you have one).
Step 8: Reinstall the caliper
- Set the caliper back over the new pads by hand.
- Install the two slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet (3/8").
- Tighten with a torque wrench (10–150 ft-lbs range): Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Repeat on the other front wheel
- Do the same pad replacement steps on the other side.
- Replace pads on both front wheels as a pair.
Step 10: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts
- Reinstall both front wheels and hand-thread lug nuts.
- Lower the vehicle off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench (10–150 ft-lbs range): Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
âś… After Repair
- With the engine off, pump the brake pedal 10–15 times until it feels firm (this seats the pistons against the new pads).
- Check brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
- Do a slow test drive in a safe area; confirm normal braking and no pulling/noise.
- Pad bed-in (basic): make 6–10 gentle stops from ~30 mph down to ~5 mph, allowing a little cool-down between stops.
- Recheck lug nut torque after 25–50 miles using a torque wrench (10–150 ft-lbs range).
