🔧 Front Brake Pads - Replacement

Replacing the front brake pads on your Tacoma means removing the front calipers, swapping the pads, and making sure the caliper slides move freely. This is a straightforward brake job, but you must keep everything clean and torque the hardware correctly so the brakes work safely.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on level ground and chock the rear wheels before lifting the front.
  • Use jack stands. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Brake dust may be harmful. Do not blow it off with compressed air.
  • Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
  • Support the caliper with wire or a hook. Do not let it hang by the hose.
  • Brake fluid may rise when the caliper pistons are pushed back. Watch the master cylinder reservoir.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and engage the parking brake.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts before lifting the truck.
  • Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir before pushing the pistons back.
  • If the brake fluid is near the MAX line, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool before compressing the calipers.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen and lift the front end

  • Use a 21mm socket to loosen the front wheel lug nuts 1/2 turn while the truck is still on the ground.
  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of the truck at the proper front jacking point.
  • Place jack stands under the frame and lower the truck onto them.
  • Remove both front wheels with the 21mm socket.

Step 2: Remove the caliper

  • Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket carefully.
  • Hang the caliper with bungee cord or mechanic's wire. Do not let it hang by the brake hose.

Step 3: Remove the old pads and hardware

  • Slide the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
  • Remove the pad clips and hardware from the bracket.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver if the clips are stuck.
  • Clean brackets make brakes slide better.

Step 4: Inspect and clean the bracket

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust and buildup from the pad contact points.
  • Spray the bracket with brake cleaner and wipe it dry with shop towels.
  • Install the new hardware kit in the bracket.

Step 5: Compress the caliper piston

  • Use a brake caliper compression tool (specialty) to slowly push the piston back into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing the piston.
  • Make sure the piston goes in straight and does not tilt.

Step 6: Install the new pads

  • Apply a thin film of brake caliper grease to the pad contact points and backing plate contact areas only.
  • Install the new pads into the bracket in the same orientation as the old ones.
  • Make sure the pads sit fully in the clips.

Step 7: Reinstall the caliper

  • Place the caliper back over the new pads.
  • Install the caliper slide pin bolts using the 14mm socket.
  • Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall wheels and lower the truck

  • Reinstall both front wheels.
  • Use the 21mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Lower the truck with the floor jack.
  • Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs) on the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 9: Restore pedal feel

  • Before moving the truck, press the brake pedal slowly several times with your foot.
  • Keep pumping until the pedal feels firm.
  • Check the brake fluid level and top off if needed.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the truck and confirm the brake warning light is off.
  • Test the brakes at very low speed in a safe area.
  • Listen for dragging, scraping, or grinding noises.
  • New pads need a short break-in period. Make several gentle stops first.
  • If the pedal feels soft, stop and recheck the install.
