🔧 Front Brake Pads - Replacement

Your front brake pads wear down over time and should be replaced before they damage the rotors. On your Silverado, this job is straightforward if you keep everything clean and support the truck safely while the front wheels are off.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a level surface with the transmission in Park and the parking brake fully set.
  • Chock the rear wheels before lifting the front of the truck.
  • Use jack stands. Never rely on the floor jack alone.
  • Brake dust may be present. Avoid blowing it with compressed air.
  • Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
  • If pad wear is uneven, inspect the caliper slide pins and rotors before reassembly.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for truck weight)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm lug wrench or socket
  • Ratchet
  • 15mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • Torque wrench
  • C-clamp or brake caliper piston compressor
  • Flat blade screwdriver
  • Bungee cord or brake caliper hanger
  • Wire brush
  • Brake parts cleaner
  • High-temperature brake grease
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Brake grease packet - Qty: 1
  • Pad hardware kit - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and chock the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck.
  • If one side is worn more than the other, inspect both front brakes.
  • Keep the ignition off while the caliper is removed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the front wheels

  • Use a 21mm lug wrench or socket to loosen the front lug nuts about one turn each.
  • Do not remove them yet.

Step 2: Lift and secure the truck

  • Use the floor jack to lift the front of the truck at a proper front jacking point.
  • Place jack stands under the front frame areas and lower the truck onto them.
  • Remove the front wheels with the 21mm lug wrench or socket.

Step 3: Remove the caliper

  • Use a 15mm socket and ratchet to remove the two caliper guide pin bolts.
  • Carefully lift the caliper off the bracket.
  • Hang the caliper with a bungee cord or brake caliper hanger. Do not let it hang by the hose.

Step 4: Remove the old brake pads

  • Slide the old inner and outer pads out of the caliper bracket.
  • If the pad clips are stuck, use a flat blade screwdriver to gently pry them free.
  • Remove the old hardware clips from the bracket if your new pad set includes replacements.

Step 5: Inspect and clean the bracket

  • Use a wire brush and brake parts cleaner to clean the pad lands and hardware seats.
  • Check the rotor for deep grooves, cracks, or heavy rust.
  • Inspect the slide pins for smooth movement. If they are dry or sticky, clean and regrease them.

Step 6: Compress the caliper piston

  • Use a C-clamp or brake caliper piston compressor to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Stop if the level gets too high.
  • Go slow to avoid seal damage.

Step 7: Install the new pads and hardware

  • Install the new hardware clips into the caliper bracket if included.
  • Apply a thin layer of high-temperature brake grease to the pad contact points and clip ears.
  • Install the new inner and outer pads in the correct positions.

Step 8: Reinstall the caliper

  • Slide the caliper back over the new pads and rotor.
  • Use the 15mm socket and ratchet to reinstall the guide pin bolts.
  • Torque to 31 Nm (23 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reinstall the wheel

  • Put the wheel back on and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the truck with the floor jack and remove the jack stands.
  • Use the 21mm lug wrench or socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Repeat on the other side

  • Replace the pads on the opposite front wheel using the same steps.
  • Brake pads should always be replaced in pairs.

✅ After Repair

  • Press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
  • Check the brake fluid level and adjust if needed.
  • Test the brakes at low speed in a safe area before normal driving.
  • For the first 200 miles, avoid hard stops unless needed for safety.
  • If you hear grinding, the rotor may also need replacement.
