🔧 Outback - Front Brake Pad Replacement

Replacing your Outback’s front brake pads restores safe stopping power and prevents rotor damage. You’ll remove the front calipers, swap the pads and hardware, then reassemble and verify everything moves smoothly.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧯 Work on level ground and support the Outback with jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
  • 🧤 Brake dust is harmful—wear nitrile gloves and a dust mask; use brake cleaner instead of blowing dust.
  • 🔥 Brakes get hot—let the front brakes cool before starting.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while a caliper is off the rotor.
  • 🔩 Keep grease and oil off pad friction material and rotor surfaces.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 19mm socket
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 1/2" drive torque wrench (20-150 ft-lbs range)
  • 14mm socket
  • 17mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-50 ft-lbs range)
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • C-clamp (6" minimum)
  • Wire brush
  • Bungee cord
  • Small suction pump (fluid transfer)
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Dust mask

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Front brake pad hardware/clip kit - Qty: 1
  • Brake caliper grease (silicone brake lubricant) - Qty: 1
  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on a level surface, leave the transmission in 1st gear, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🔧 Break the front lug nuts loose 1/4 turn using a 19mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
  • 🧴 Open the hood and check the brake fluid level. If it’s near “MAX,” remove a little using a small suction pump so it won’t overflow when you compress the pistons.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the front and remove the wheels

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front at the center jack point, then support both sides with jack stands.
  • Remove the lug nuts with a 19mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet, then remove both front wheels.

Step 2: Locate the caliper and pad hardware

  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room (left for right side work, right for left side work).
  • Look at the caliper: the smaller bolts are the slide pin bolts (they let the caliper move as pads wear).

Step 3: Remove the caliper (do not hang it by the hose)

  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Carefully lift the caliper off the rotor. If it’s tight, gently pry with a flathead screwdriver.
  • Support the caliper with a bungee cord so the brake hose is not stretched.

Step 4: Remove the old pads and hardware clips

  • Slide the old inner and outer pads out of the bracket by hand.
  • Remove the pad hardware/abutment clips from the bracket (they’re the thin stainless clips the pads ride on).
  • Use brake cleaner and a wire brush to clean the bracket “pad lands” where the clips sit. Clean metal helps prevent squeaks.

Step 5: Compress the caliper piston

  • Place one old pad against the piston face (to spread the pressure evenly).
  • Use a C-clamp to slowly press the piston back into the caliper until it’s fully seated.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir under the hood while compressing. If it rises too high, remove a bit using the small suction pump.

Step 6: Install new hardware clips and grease correctly

  • Snap the new hardware/abutment clips into the bracket by hand.
  • Apply a thin film of brake caliper grease to the clip surfaces where the pad “ears” touch (metal-to-metal contact points only).
  • Do not get grease on the rotor or pad friction material.

Step 7: Install the new pads

  • Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket, making sure they slide freely in the clips.
  • If your pad set includes wear indicators, install them in the same position as the originals on that side.

Step 8: Reinstall the caliper and torque the bolts

  • Lower the caliper over the new pads.
  • Install the slide pin bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading, then tighten with a 14mm socket.
  • Torque the front caliper slide pin bolts to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs) using a 3/8" drive torque wrench.

Step 9: Repeat on the other front wheel

  • Repeat Steps 3–8 on the other side using the same tools.
  • Make sure both calipers are torqued before reinstalling wheels.

Step 10: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Reinstall the wheels and hand-thread all lug nuts.
  • Lower the Outback off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a 19mm socket and 1/2" drive torque wrench.
  • Torque the lug nuts to 120 Nm (89 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • 🦶 With the engine off, slowly pump the brake pedal 8–12 times until it feels firm. This seats the pistons against the new pads.
  • 🧴 Set brake fluid to the correct level in the reservoir (do not overfill).
  • 🔍 Check for leaks and confirm the brake hose isn’t twisted or rubbing.
  • 🧪 Test at low speed first. Make a few gentle stops to confirm normal braking.
  • 🛣️ Pad bed-in (basic): 6–10 moderate stops from ~30 mph to 5 mph, with cooling time between stops. Avoid hard stops for the first 150–200 miles unless needed for safety.
