1500 Classic - Front Brake Pads & Rotors Replacement 🛠️

Nice project. I’ll walk you through this in simple steps for your first brake job.

Safety First ⚠️

  • 🧱 Always support the truck with jack stands, never work under a jack alone.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses; brake dust is nasty.
  • 🧯 Work on a flat, solid surface, parking brake ON, transmission in PARK, engine OFF.

Tools & Supplies You’ll Need 🧰

  • 🔧 Floor jack (rated for a full-size truck)
  • 🧱 Jack stands (2x, for the front frame rails)
  • 🔩 Lug wrench or 1/2" drive breaker bar with 22 mm socket (wheel nuts)
  • 🔧 Socket set:
    • Caliper slide pin bolts: usually 13 mm
    • Caliper bracket bolts: usually 21 mm
  • 🔧 Wrenches (13 mm, 21 mm if needed for access)
  • 🪛 Flat screwdriver / small pry bar (to gently compress pads and remove clips)
  • 🧲 Wire brush (to clean rust from hub and bracket)
  • 🧴 Brake cleaner spray (cleans rotors and hardware)
  • 🧴 High-temp brake grease (for slide pins and pad contact points)
  • 🧴 Anti-seize compound (thin film on hub face, optional but helpful)
  • 🧰 C-clamp or disc brake piston tool (to push caliper piston back)
  • 🧵 Wire / bungee cord (to hang caliper, so it doesn’t hang by the hose)
  • 📏 Torque wrench (very important to tighten bolts correctly)
  • 🧼 Shop rags / paper towels

New Parts You Need 📦

  • 🛞 Front brake pads (set for both front wheels)
  • 🛞 Front brake rotors (2x, left and right)
  • 🧩 New pad hardware (stainless clips that pads slide in) – often included with pads

Always replace pads and rotors on both front wheels together.

Key Torque Specs (Front) 📏

  • 🔩 Front wheel lug nuts: ~130 ft-lb (176 N·m)
  • 🔩 Caliper slide pin bolts: ~26 ft-lb (35 N·m)
  • 🔩 Caliper bracket bolts: ~130 ft-lb (176 N·m)

These values are typical for your truck’s front brakes; use a torque wrench, not just “feel”.

Step 1 – Prepare the Truck 🧱

  • 🛑 Park on level ground, set parking brake, transmission in PARK.
  • 🔌 Pop the hood and remove the brake fluid reservoir cap or loosen it. This lets fluid move back when you push the pistons in.
  • 🔧 Slightly loosen (crack) the front wheel lug nuts with the truck still on the ground (about 1/2 turn).

Step 2 – Lift and Support the Front 🔼

  • 🧱 Place the floor jack under the front crossmember (center under the engine area, solid metal beam).
  • 🔼 Lift until both front wheels are off the ground.
  • 🧱 Place jack stands under the frame rails behind each front wheel and lower the truck onto them.
  • 🛞 Remove the front wheels completely.

Step 3 – Remove the Caliper (One Side at a Time) 🔧

  • 👀 Turn the steering wheel to give better access to the side you’re working on (key ON, engine OFF, then back OFF).
  • 🔍 Look at the caliper:
    • The caliper is the part that squeezes the pads.
    • The bracket is the heavier piece that bolts to the knuckle and holds the pads.
  • 🔩 On the back of the caliper, find the two slide pin bolts (top and bottom, usually 13 mm).
  • 🔧 Remove both slide pin bolts.
  • 🪛 Gently pry the caliper away from the rotor using a flat screwdriver between pad and rotor if needed.
  • 🪢 Hang the caliper from the spring or frame with wire/bungee. Do not let it hang by the rubber brake hose.

Step 4 – Remove Old Pads & Hardware 🧱

  • 🧱 Slide the old pads out of the bracket.
  • 🧩 Remove the stainless hardware clips from the bracket (these are where the pad ears sit).
  • 🧲 Use the wire brush to clean:
    • Where the hardware clips sit on the bracket.
    • Any rust or debris on the bracket surfaces.

Step 5 – Remove the Caliper Bracket & Rotor 🛞

  • 🔩 Locate the two large caliper bracket bolts on the back (usually 21 mm).
  • 🔧 Use a breaker bar or strong ratchet to remove both bolts; the bracket will come off.
  • 🛞 Pull the rotor off the hub:
    • If it’s stuck from rust, tap around the hat (center area) with a rubber mallet.
    • Do not hit the wheel studs directly.
  • 🧲 Clean the hub face with a wire brush until it’s smooth and mostly shiny metal.
  • 🧴 Wipe with brake cleaner and a rag.
  • 🧴 Apply a very thin film of anti-seize on the hub face (not on studs or rotor friction surfaces).

Step 6 – Install New Rotor 🆕

  • 🧴 Spray both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove oil coating, then wipe dry.
  • 🛞 Place the new rotor onto the hub, seated flat.
  • 🔩 You can temporarily hold it with one lug nut finger-tight to keep it from wobbling.

Step 7 – Prepare Bracket & New Pads 🧩

  • 🧩 Install the new stainless hardware clips into the cleaned bracket. Make sure they snap fully into place.
  • 🧴 Apply a very small amount of brake grease on:
    • The areas of the clips where the pad “ears” will slide.
Do not get grease on pad friction material or rotor.
  • 🔧 Reinstall the bracket over the new rotor and start the two large bolts by hand.
  • 🔩 Torque the caliper bracket bolts to about 130 ft-lb (176 N·m).
  • 🧱 Slide the new pads into the bracket:
    • Inner pad goes on the inside (toward the piston).
    • Outer pad goes on the outside.

Step 8 – Compress Caliper Piston 🧰

  • 👀 Look at the caliper piston (round part that pushes the inner pad).
  • 🧴 Check the slide pins (the smooth pins the caliper bolts go into):
    • Pull them out one at a time.
    • Wipe old grease off.
    • Apply fresh brake grease and slide them back in until they move smoothly.
  • 🧰 Use a C-clamp or piston tool:
    • Place the old inner pad against the piston.
    • Put the clamp over the back of the caliper and the pad.
    • Slowly tighten until the piston is fully pushed back into the caliper.
  • 👀 While doing this, watch the brake fluid reservoir under the hood so it doesn’t overflow. If it gets close to the top, remove some fluid with a clean syringe or turkey baster.

Step 9 – Reinstall Caliper 🔧

  • 🪢 Take the caliper off the hanger and position it over the new pads and rotor.
  • 🔩 Align the slide pin holes and install the caliper slide pin bolts by hand first.
  • 🔧 Torque the slide pin bolts to about 26 ft-lb (35 N·m).

Step 10 – Repeat on the Other Side 🔁

  • 🔁 Do the exact same steps on the other front wheel.

Step 11 – Reinstall Wheels & Lower the Truck 🚗

  • 🛞 Put the wheels back on and hand-tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • 🔽 Jack the truck slightly, remove jack stands, and lower the truck to the ground.
  • 🔧 Torque the lug nuts in a star pattern to about 130 ft-lb (176 N·m).

Step 12 – Final Steps & Bed-In Procedure ✅

  • 🧴 Check brake fluid level in the reservoir and adjust to the “MAX” line if needed. Reinstall the cap.
  • 🦶 Before driving, pump the brake pedal slowly 10–15 times until it feels firm. This seats the pads against the rotors.
  • 🚗 For the first 300–500 km:
    • Avoid hard panic stops unless necessary.
    • Do several gentle stops from 50–60 km/h down to 10–20 km/h to bed the pads and rotors.
  • 👂 Listen for grinding, clunks, or pulling to one side. If anything feels wrong, stop and recheck your work.
