🔧 CX-5 - Front Brake Pads & Rotors Replacement

You’ll remove the front wheels, take off the brake caliper and bracket, replace the rotor, then install new pads and reassemble everything with the correct torque. This restores braking performance and prevents vibration or grinding caused by worn pads/rotors.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support your CX-5 on jack stands before working underneath.
  • ⚠️ Brakes may be hot; let them cool before touching rotors/calipers.
  • ⚠️ Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose; support it with a bungee cord.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust is harmful; use brake cleaner, not compressed air.
  • ⚠️ Keep grease and brake fluid off pad/rotor friction surfaces.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for front brakes on your CX-5.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 17mm socket
  • Ratchet (3/8" drive)
  • Breaker bar (1/2" drive)
  • Torque wrench (10-200 Nm range)
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • C-clamp brake piston tool
  • Bungee cord
  • Wire brush
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Rubber mallet
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

  • Front brake pad hardware kit (clips/shims) - Qty: 1
  • Brake lubricant (silicone brake grease) - Qty: 1
  • Brake fluid (DOT 3) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🧱 Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🧱 Slightly loosen the front lug nuts before lifting (do not remove yet).
  • 🧱 Open the hood and check the brake fluid level; when you compress caliper pistons, the fluid level can rise.
  • 🧠 A C-clamp brake piston tool is a clamp used to slowly push the caliper piston back in.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the front and remove the wheels

  • Use wheel chocks to secure the rear wheels.
  • Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar to crack the lug nuts loose (about 1/2 turn).
  • Lift the front with a floor jack and place jack stands under the front support points.
  • Remove lug nuts using the 21mm socket and take the wheels off.

Step 2: Remove the brake caliper (do not disconnect the hose)

  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself room (left side: wheel turned right; right side: wheel turned left).
  • Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket and hang it from the strut spring using a bungee cord.

Step 3: Remove old pads and inspect the slide pins

  • Pull the pads out of the bracket by hand (use a flathead screwdriver gently if stuck).
  • Slide the caliper pins in/out by hand to confirm they move smoothly.
  • Clean pad contact areas on the bracket using a wire brush and brake cleaner spray.

Step 4: Remove the caliper bracket

  • Use a 17mm socket and breaker bar to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the bracket and set it aside.
  • When reinstalling later: Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the old rotor

  • Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
  • If it’s stuck, tap the rotor hat area with a rubber mallet until it breaks free. Tap evenly; don’t hit studs.
  • Clean the hub face with a wire brush and brake cleaner spray (a clean hub helps prevent brake pulsation).

Step 6: Install the new rotor

  • Spray the new rotor with brake cleaner spray and wipe it clean (removes protective oil).
  • Place the new rotor onto the hub.
  • To keep it from wobbling while you work, thread on one lug nut by hand (use the wheel’s lug nut; remove it later).

Step 7: Reinstall the bracket and hardware clips

  • Install the new pad hardware clips onto the bracket (from your hardware kit).
  • Reinstall the bracket and start both bolts by hand.
  • Use a 17mm socket and torque wrench: Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Compress the caliper piston

  • Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston face.
  • Use a C-clamp brake piston tool to slowly press the piston fully back into the caliper.
  • Check the brake fluid reservoir under the hood so it doesn’t overflow (wipe spills immediately).

Step 9: Install the new pads

  • Apply a thin film of brake lubricant (silicone brake grease) to pad ears where they slide in the clips (do not get any on the pad friction surface).
  • Install the inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand.

Step 10: Reinstall the caliper

  • Lower the caliper over the new pads.
  • Install the two slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket.
  • Use a torque wrench: Torque to 28 Nm (21 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Reinstall the wheels

  • Reinstall wheels and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench in a star pattern: Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Restore pedal feel before moving

  • With the engine off, press the brake pedal slowly 10-15 times until it feels firm.
  • Re-check brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 only if needed.
  • Do a final visual check for any leaks or twisted hoses.

✅ After Repair

  • 🧪 Do a cautious test drive in a safe area; confirm straight stopping and no grinding.
  • 🧪 If your steering wheel shakes during braking, re-check hub cleaning and rotor seating.
  • 🧪 Bed-in the new pads/rotors: make 6-10 medium stops from ~50 km/h to ~15 km/h, driving a minute between stops to cool. Don’t hold pedal at a full stop.
  • 🧪 Recheck lug nut torque after 50-100 km.
