🔧 CX-30 - Front Brake Pads & Rotor Replacement

You’ll remove the front wheels, swap the front brake pads and rotors on both sides, then reassemble and verify safe pedal feel. Replacing pads and rotors together helps prevent vibration, noise, and uneven braking.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work on level ground and chock the rear wheels.
  • 🛑 Support your CX-30 with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • 🛑 Brakes make dust—wear a mask and use brake cleaner, not compressed air.
  • 🛑 Don’t let the caliper hang by the brake hose; support it with a hanger.
  • 🛑 Brake fluid can damage paint; wipe spills immediately.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for front brakes on your CX-30.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 1/2" drive torque wrench (20-150 ft-lbs range)
  • 14mm socket
  • 17mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-80 ft-lbs range)
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • C-clamp (6")
  • Brake piston compressor tool (specialty)
  • Bungee cord
  • Wire brush
  • Rubber mallet
  • Micrometer or vernier caliper (specialty)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock both rear wheels with wheel chocks.
  • Crack the front lug nuts loose 1/4 turn using a 21mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
  • Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir; keep the cap loosely set on top so pressure can vent while compressing pistons.
  • Tip: Place rags around the reservoir.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front end

  • Use a floor jack at the front center jack point and raise the front of your CX-30.
  • Place jack stands under the left and right front pinch welds (or approved support points) and lower onto the stands.
  • Give the vehicle a firm shake to confirm it’s stable.

Step 2: Remove the front wheels

  • Remove the lug nuts using a 21mm socket and ratchet.
  • Remove both front wheels and set them aside.

Step 3: Remove the caliper (do not open the brake line)

  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself room (left side: wheel turned right; right side: wheel turned left).
  • Remove the two caliper slide bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket. Use a bungee cord to hang it from the strut spring.
  • Tip: Never let the caliper dangle.

Step 4: Remove old pads and inspect

  • Pull the brake pads out by hand (use a flathead screwdriver gently if stuck).
  • Inspect pad wear. Uneven wear can mean sticky slide pins.

Step 5: Compress the caliper piston

  • Place an old pad against the piston face.
  • Use a C-clamp (6") or brake piston compressor tool (specialty) to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir level as you compress; remove excess with rags if it gets close to overflowing.

Step 6: Remove the caliper bracket

  • Remove the two caliper bracket bolts using a 17mm socket and breaker bar.
  • Set the bracket on the suspension (or hang it) so it doesn’t stress the hose.
  • When reinstalling: apply threadlocker (medium strength) and Torque to 98 Nm (72 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Remove the rotor

  • Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
  • If it’s stuck, spray hub-to-rotor area with brake cleaner spray, then tap the rotor hat with a rubber mallet to break it free.
  • Clean the hub face with a wire brush until smooth (this helps prevent brake pulsation).

Step 8: Install the new rotor

  • Clean both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner spray and shop rags (removes shipping oil).
  • Install the new rotor onto the hub.

Step 9: Service slide pins and install new hardware

  • Remove the slide pins from the bracket by hand.
  • Wipe old grease off using shop rags, then apply fresh brake caliper slide pin grease (silicone).
  • Install the new pad hardware clips from the hardware kit onto the bracket.
  • Tip: Grease only metal-to-metal sliding points.

Step 10: Reinstall bracket and install new pads

  • Reinstall the caliper bracket using a 17mm socket and ratchet, then tighten with a torque wrench.
  • Torque to 98 Nm (72 ft-lbs).
  • Install the new pads into the bracket by hand (make sure they slide freely in the clips).

Step 11: Reinstall caliper

  • Set the caliper over the new pads.
  • Install the caliper slide bolts using a 14mm socket.
  • Torque to 28 Nm (21 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Reinstall the wheels and hand-thread all lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle to the ground using the floor jack.
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench.
  • Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Repeat on the other front side

  • Do the exact same steps on the other front wheel.
  • Tip: One side at a time prevents mix-ups.

âś… After Repair

  • With the engine OFF, pump the brake pedal slowly 10–15 times until it feels firm (this seats the pistons).
  • Check brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
  • Start the engine and confirm the pedal still feels firm.
  • Test at low speed first. Confirm no pulling, grinding, or warning lights.
  • Brake bed-in: make 6–10 moderate stops from ~35 mph down to ~5 mph, allowing short cool-down between stops. Avoid hard panic stops for the first 200 miles if possible.
