🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the front end
- Use the floor jack to lift the front of the truck at a safe lift point.
- Support it with jack stands placed under the frame.
- Remove the front wheels with the 21mm lug socket and breaker bar.
Step 2: Remove the caliper
- Use the 18mm socket and ratchet to remove the caliper bracket bolts.
- Lift the caliper off and hang it with a bungee cord or caliper hanger.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.
Step 3: Remove the old pads and bracket
- Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket.
- If needed, use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently release pad clips.
- Remove the caliper bracket bolts with the 18mm socket if the rotor will not clear the bracket.
Step 4: Remove the rotor
- Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
- If it is stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver or tap the rotor hat area gently from the back.
- Clean the hub face with a wire brush and brake cleaner.
- A clean hub helps prevent brake vibration.
Step 5: Install the new rotor
- Spray the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove protective oil.
- Install the rotor on the hub and make sure it sits flat.
- If equipped, hold it in place with a lug nut hand-tight while you work.
Step 6: Prep and install the new pads
- Clean the caliper bracket with brake cleaner and a wire brush.
- Install new hardware clips from the brake hardware kit.
- Apply a thin layer of brake caliper slide pin grease to the slide pins and contact points.
- Install the new pads into the bracket.
Step 7: Compress the caliper piston
- Use a C-clamp or brake caliper compression tool to push the caliper piston back in slowly.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir so it does not overflow.
- Compress slowly to avoid damaging seals.
Step 8: Reinstall the caliper
- Slide the caliper back over the new pads and rotor.
- Reinstall and tighten the caliper bracket bolts with the 18mm socket.
- Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reinstall the wheels
- Put the wheel back on and hand-start the lug nuts.
- Lower the truck and torque the lug nuts with the torque wrench and 21mm lug socket.
- Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs) in a star pattern.
Step 10: Repeat on the other side
- Perform the same procedure on the opposite front wheel.
- Replace brake parts in pairs.
✅ After Repair
- Before driving, pump the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
- Check the brake fluid level and top off if needed.
- Test the brakes at low speed in a safe area.
- For the first 200-300 miles, avoid hard stops unless necessary.
- If you feel vibration, recheck rotor seating and lug nut torque.
