🔧 Odyssey - Front Brake Pads & Rotors Replacement

On your Odyssey, the front brake pads clamp the rotors to slow the van down. Replacing pads and rotors together restores smooth braking, reduces vibration, and helps prevent noise and uneven wear.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and use jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Brakes create dust—wear a mask and avoid blowing dust with compressed air.
  • ⚠️ Do one side at a time so you can reference the other side if needed.
  • ⚠️ Keep brake fluid off paint; it can damage the finish.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for front brakes on your Odyssey.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 19mm socket
  • Ratchet (3/8" drive)
  • Breaker bar (1/2" drive)
  • Torque wrench (10-200 ft-lbs range)
  • Metric socket set (10mm-19mm)
  • Metric wrench set (10mm-19mm)
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • C-clamp brake piston compressor
  • Bungee cord
  • Wire brush
  • Rubber mallet
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • High-temp silicone brake grease
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Dust mask

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Front brake rotors - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
  • Front brake hardware kit (abutment clips) - Qty: 1
  • Brake pad wear shims (if not included with pads) - Qty: 1
  • Brake fluid (DOT 3) - Qty: 1 quart

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts about 1/2 turn using a 19mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
  • Open the hood and remove the brake fluid reservoir cap (leave it sitting on top) so fluid can move as you compress the piston.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front end

  • Lift the front using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the proper front jacking point.
  • Set the van onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and gently shake the van to confirm it’s stable.
  • Remove the wheel using a 19mm socket and ratchet.

Step 2: Remove the caliper

  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room (left for left side, right for right side).
  • Remove the caliper slide bolts using your metric socket set (10mm-19mm) and ratchet.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket, then hang it from the suspension using a bungee cord (never let it hang by the hose).
  • Tip: Take a photo before disassembly.

Step 3: Remove the old pads and hardware

  • Pull the pads out of the bracket by hand; use a flathead screwdriver gently if stuck.
  • Remove the stainless hardware/abutment clips from the bracket (usually they pop out by hand; use a flathead screwdriver if needed).

Step 4: Remove the caliper bracket

  • Remove the two bracket bolts using a breaker bar (1/2" drive) and your metric socket set (10mm-19mm).
  • Set the bracket aside on a clean surface.
  • Reinstall later and Torque to Honda specification (use service manual spec for your Odyssey).

Step 5: Remove the rotor

  • If the rotor is stuck, spray the hub/rotor center with brake cleaner spray and let it soak.
  • Tap the rotor hat between wheel studs using a rubber mallet until it frees up.
  • Clean the hub face with a wire brush so the new rotor sits flat (this helps prevent vibration).

Step 6: Install the new rotor

  • Clean both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner spray and shop towels to remove shipping oil.
  • Place the rotor on the hub. To keep it from wobbling, thread on one lug nut backwards by hand (use the existing lug nut, no tool needed).

Step 7: Service the bracket and install new hardware

  • Clean the pad “slides” (where pads touch the bracket) with a wire brush.
  • Install the new hardware clips by hand.
  • Apply a thin layer of high-temp silicone brake grease to the pad contact points on the clips (not on rotor/pad friction material).

Step 8: Reinstall the caliper bracket

  • Reinstall the bracket using your metric socket set (10mm-19mm) and ratchet.
  • Tighten with a torque wrench (10-200 ft-lbs range): Torque to Honda specification (use service manual spec for your Odyssey).

Step 9: Compress the caliper piston

  • Place an old pad against the piston face (hand place) to spread the force evenly.
  • Compress the piston slowly using a C-clamp brake piston compressor until it bottoms out.
  • Check the brake fluid reservoir; if it gets too high, remove a little with a shop towel (do not overflow).
  • Tip: Go slow to avoid damaging seals.

Step 10: Install new pads and reinstall the caliper

  • Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand.
  • If your pads include a wear indicator, match it to the same position as the original set.
  • Slide the caliper back over the pads.
  • Install the slide bolts using a metric socket set (10mm-19mm) and ratchet, then tighten with a torque wrench (10-200 ft-lbs range): Torque to Honda specification (use service manual spec for your Odyssey).

Step 11: Reinstall the wheel

  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-thread all lug nuts.
  • Lower the van off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern with a torque wrench (10-200 ft-lbs range): Torque to 127 N·m (94 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Repeat on the other front side

  • Repeat Steps 1-11 for the other front wheel.
  • Tip: Never reuse pads on a new rotor.

✅ After Repair

  • Press the brake pedal slowly 10-15 times before driving until it feels firm (this seats the pads to the rotors).
  • Check brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 brake fluid if needed.
  • Test in a safe area at low speed first; confirm no pulling, grinding, or warning lights.
  • Pad bedding (recommended): do 6-10 moderate stops from ~35 mph to ~5 mph, with cool-down driving between stops.
  • Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using a torque wrench (10-200 ft-lbs range): Torque to 127 N·m (94 ft-lbs).

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $500-$900 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $180-$400 (parts only)

You Save: $320-$500 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.5-2.5 hours.

Quick check (so I can make this 100% accurate for your Odyssey):

  • Do you have a torque wrench, or do you want me to list the exact Honda torque specs for the caliper bracket bolts and slide pin bolts?
  • When you look at the caliper bolts, are the heads 12mm or 14mm (and the bracket bolts 17mm or 19mm)?
