🔧 F-250 Super Duty - Front Brake Pads & Rotor Replacement
You’ll remove the front wheels, unbolt the front brake calipers and brackets, swap the rotors, then install new pads and hardware. This restores braking power and prevents vibration/pulsation caused by worn pads or warped rotors.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Support your F-250 Super Duty on jack stands on level ground; never rely on a jack.
- 🛞 Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks before lifting the front.
- 🧤 Wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves; brake dust and cleaner are irritants.
- 🔥 Brakes can be hot—let everything cool before touching rotors/calipers.
- 🧴 Don’t let brake fluid overflow when compressing pistons; keep an eye on the reservoir.
- 🔩 Do not hang the caliper by the brake hose; use a hanger.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
- Front brake rotors - Qty: 2
- Front brake pad hardware kit (clips/shims) - Qty: 1

- High-temp silicone brake grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
- Crack the front lug nuts loose before lifting.
- Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir; you’ll monitor the level while compressing caliper pistons.
- Torque wrench note: it’s a tool that tightens bolts to an exact spec so nothing is too loose or too tight.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen lug nuts and lift the front
- Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar 1/2" to loosen (do not remove) the front lug nuts.
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front and place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the frame.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
Step 2: Remove the front wheels
- Remove lug nuts with a 21mm socket and ratchet 1/2", then remove both front wheels.
Step 3: Remove the caliper (do not stretch the hose)
- Turn the steering to give yourself room at the caliper you’re working on.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to carefully pry the caliper outward slightly to create clearance.
- Remove the caliper slide bolts using a 13mm socket and ratchet 1/2".
- Lift the caliper off and support it with a brake caliper hanger hook (specialty).
Step 4: Remove the old pads and caliper bracket
- Remove the pads from the bracket by hand.
- Remove the caliper bracket bolts using a 21mm socket and breaker bar 1/2".
- Set the bracket aside.
Step 5: Remove the rotor
- Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
- If it’s stuck from rust, tap around the rotor hat with a dead-blow hammer until it breaks free.
Step 6: Clean the hub face and prep the new rotor
- Use a wire brush to clean rust off the hub face (where the rotor sits).
- Spray the new rotor with brake parts cleaner and wipe it clean to remove protective oil.
- A clean hub helps prevent brake pulsation.
Step 7: Install the new rotor
- Slide the new rotor onto the hub.
- Temporarily hold it flush by installing 2 lug nuts backwards by hand, then snug them with a 21mm socket and ratchet 1/2" (do not fully torque).
Step 8: Reinstall the caliper bracket
- Reinstall the bracket and start the bolts by hand.
- Tighten using a 21mm socket and torque wrench 1/2".
- Torque to 295 Nm (218 ft-lbs)
Step 9: Install new pad hardware and pads
- Install the new hardware clips from the front brake pad hardware kit into the bracket.
- Apply a thin film of high-temp silicone brake grease to the pad “ears” where they slide in the clips.
- Install the new pads into the bracket by hand.
Step 10: Compress the caliper pistons
- Check the brake fluid reservoir under the hood before compressing.
- Use a C-clamp (6-inch minimum) to slowly push the caliper pistons back until fully seated.
- Brake caliper piston compression note: this pushes the pistons back so thicker new pads fit over the rotor.
- If fluid rises near the max line, remove a little into a drain pan (do not spill on paint).
Step 11: Reinstall the caliper
- Place the caliper over the new pads and rotor.
- Install slide bolts using a 13mm socket and torque wrench 1/2".
- Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs)
Step 12: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 3–11 for the other front wheel.
- Always replace pads and rotors in pairs.
Step 13: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts
- Reinstall wheels and hand-start all lug nuts.
- Lower the truck off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Torque lug nuts in a star pattern using a 21mm socket and torque wrench 1/2".
- Torque to 224 Nm (165 ft-lbs)
✅ After Repair
- With the engine off, pump the brake pedal 10–15 times until it feels firm.
- Check brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
- Start the engine and confirm the pedal feels normal (it may drop slightly with brake assist).
- Do a careful test drive at low speed and confirm no pulling, grinding, or warning lights.
- Pad bedding (break-in): make 8–10 moderate stops from 40 to 10 mph, letting brakes cool briefly between stops.
