🔧 Suburban - Front Brake Pads & Rotor Replacement

You’ll be removing the front calipers, swapping the brake pads, and replacing the front rotors. Worn pads or warped rotors can cause noise, vibration, longer stopping distance, and uneven braking.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a flat, solid surface and use jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust is harmful—wear a mask and avoid blowing dust with compressed air.
  • ⚠️ Do not let the brake caliper hang by the brake hose—support it with a hanger.
  • ⚠️ Keep grease and brake cleaner off the pad friction material and rotor faces.
  • ⚠️ If brake fluid rises near the top of the reservoir when compressing pistons, remove some with a suction tool to prevent overflow.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Suburban on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Pop the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. Keep the cap sitting loosely on top (don’t fully remove it yet).
  • If your brake fluid is already near the “MAX” line, have a way to remove a little (so it doesn’t overflow when pistons are pushed back).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the front wheel lug nuts

  • Use a 22mm socket and breaker bar (1/2") to crack the lug nuts loose about 1/2 turn while the tire is still on the ground.

Step 2: Lift and support the front end

  • Lift the front with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the proper front jacking point.
  • Set the truck down onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Give the vehicle a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable.

Step 3: Remove the front wheels

  • Use a 22mm socket and ratchet (1/2") to remove the lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and set it aside.

Step 4: Remove the brake caliper (and support it)

  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more space to work.
  • Use a socket set (metric) and ratchet (1/2") to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts (rear of the caliper).
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket.
  • Hang the caliper using a brake caliper hanger hook so the hose isn’t stretched.
  • Tip: Take a quick photo before disassembly.

Step 5: Remove the old brake pads and hardware

  • Pull the pads out of the bracket by hand. If tight, use a flathead screwdriver gently.
  • Remove the stainless pad clips (hardware) from the bracket.

Step 6: Remove the caliper bracket

  • Use an 18mm socket with a breaker bar (1/2") to remove the two large caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the bracket and set it aside.
  • Later reinstallation: Torque to 300 Nm (221 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Remove the rotor

  • If your rotor has a retaining screw, remove it using a Torx T30 bit.
  • Pull the rotor off the hub. If it’s stuck from rust, tap the rotor hat area with a rubber mallet until it breaks free.
  • Clean the hub face with a wire brush so the new rotor sits flat.
  • Apply a very light coat of high-temp anti-seize compound to the hub center (not the wheel studs).

Step 8: Prep and install the new rotor

  • Spray both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove protective oil.
  • Install the new rotor onto the hub.
  • If equipped, reinstall the rotor retaining screw using a Torx T30 bit and torque wrench: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 9: Service the bracket and install new pad hardware

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust where the pad clips sit on the bracket.
  • Install the new stainless hardware clips from the kit.
  • Apply a thin film of brake caliper slide pin grease (silicone) to the pad “ears” where they slide in the clips (don’t get grease on the pad face).

Step 10: Reinstall the caliper bracket

  • Position the bracket over the rotor.
  • Install the two bracket bolts by hand first (prevents cross-threading).
  • Use an 18mm socket and torque wrench: Torque to 300 Nm (221 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Compress the caliper pistons

  • Place one old brake pad against the pistons to spread force evenly.
  • Use a C-clamp brake piston compressor to slowly push the pistons back into the caliper until fully seated.
  • Check the brake fluid reservoir level under the hood and remove excess if it’s close to overflowing.
  • Tip: Compress slowly to protect seals.

Step 12: Install new brake pads and reinstall the caliper

  • Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket.
  • Lower the caliper over the new pads.
  • Install the caliper slide pin bolts using a socket set (metric) and ratchet (1/2").
  • Final tighten using a torque wrench: Torque to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Repeat on the other front side

  • Repeat Steps 4–12 on the other front wheel.
  • Tip: Do one side at a time for reference.

Step 14: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Install the wheels and hand-thread the lug nuts.
  • Lower the Suburban off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Use a torque wrench and 22mm socket to tighten lug nuts in a star pattern: Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Before moving the vehicle, press the brake pedal 10–15 times until it feels firm. This seats the pads against the rotors.
  • Verify brake fluid level is between MIN and MAX, then tighten the reservoir cap by hand.
  • Check for leaks around both front calipers.
  • Bed-in (break-in) the pads: do 8–10 medium stops from ~40 mph to 10 mph, allowing 30–60 seconds between stops (no full stop with hot brakes).
  • If you hear grinding, feel pulling, or the pedal stays soft, stop and recheck your work.
