🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the front wheels
- Use a 21mm socket to loosen and remove the lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and set them aside.
Step 2: Remove the caliper
- Use a 14mm socket to remove the caliper slide pin bolts.
- Lift the caliper off the bracket carefully.
- Hang the caliper with a bungee cord or caliper hanger; do not let it dangle by the hose.
Step 3: Remove the brake pads and hardware
- Slide the brake pads out of the bracket.
- Remove the pad clips and spring hardware if your new hardware kit includes them.
- Clean the bracket contact points with a wire brush and brake cleaner.
Step 4: Remove the caliper bracket
- Use a 17mm socket to remove the caliper bracket bolts.
- Remove the bracket from the knuckle.
- Torque on reinstall: 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Remove the rotor
- Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
- If it is stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver through the access hole or tap the rotor hat gently with a mallet.
- Clean the hub face with a wire brush so the new rotor sits flat.
Step 6: Install the new rotor
- Spray the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove protective oil.
- Install the rotor onto the hub.
- Hold the rotor tight while reinstalling parts.
Step 7: Reinstall the bracket and new pads
- Install the caliper bracket with the 17mm socket.
- Torque the bracket bolts to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
- Apply a small amount of brake caliper grease to the pad contact points and slide surfaces.
- Install the new pad clips and then the new pads.
Step 8: Compress the caliper piston
- Use a C-clamp or brake caliper compression tool (specialty) to slowly push the piston back into the caliper.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing the piston.
- If the fluid rises too high, remove a small amount before it spills.
Step 9: Reinstall the caliper
- Place the caliper over the new pads and rotor.
- Install the slide pin bolts with the 14mm socket.
- Torque the slide pin bolts to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reinstall the wheels
- Mount the wheels and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
- Lower the car to the ground.
- Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern.
- Torque the lug nuts to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Pump the brake pedal
- Before moving the car, pump the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
- This seats the caliper pistons against the new pads.
