📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground.
- Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
- Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the car.
- If the parking brake is applied, release it before removing the front wheels.
- Work on one side at a time so you can use the other side as a reference.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the wheel nuts
- Use a 21mm socket or lug wrench to loosen the front wheel nuts 1/2 turn while the car is still on the ground.
- Do not remove them yet.
Step 2: Lift and secure the car
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of the car at the proper lift point.
- Place jack stands (rated for vehicle weight) under the front support points.
- Lower the car onto the stands and give it a gentle shake to confirm it is stable.
Step 3: Remove the wheel
- Use the 21mm socket to remove the wheel nuts.
- Remove the wheel and set it aside flat so it cannot roll away.
Step 4: Remove the caliper
- Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the caliper slide bolts.
- Lift the caliper off the bracket.
- Hang the caliper with a bungee cord or caliper hanger. Do not let it dangle by the hose.
Step 5: Remove the brake pads and hardware
- Slide the old brake pads out of the bracket.
- Remove the pad clips and hardware from the bracket.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver if the pads are stuck.
Step 6: Remove the rotor
- If the rotor is stuck, use a rubber mallet to tap around the hat area.
- If there is a retaining screw, remove it with the correct Phillips screwdriver or flat-blade screwdriver, if equipped.
- Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
Step 7: Clean and inspect the mounting surface
- Use a wire brush to clean rust and buildup from the hub face.
- Spray the hub and bracket with brake cleaner.
- A clean hub helps prevent brake pulsation.
Step 8: Install the new rotor
- Spray the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove protective oil.
- Install the rotor onto the hub.
- If a retaining screw is used, install and snug it.
Step 9: Install new hardware and pads
- Install the new pad clips and hardware into the bracket.
- Apply a thin coat of brake grease to the pad contact points and backing plates only. Do not get grease on the rotor or friction surface.
- Install the new brake pads into the bracket.
Step 10: Compress the caliper piston
- Use a brake caliper compression tool (specialty) to slowly push the piston back into the caliper.
- Press it in evenly and stop if it binds.
- Go slow to avoid damaging the seal.
Step 11: Reinstall the caliper
- Place the caliper over the new pads and bracket.
- Use the 14mm socket to reinstall the caliper slide bolts.
- Torque to 33 Nm (24 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Reinstall the wheel
- Put the wheel back on and install the lug nuts by hand.
- Lower the car enough that the tire touches the ground and does not spin.
- Use the 21mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Repeat on the other side
- Do the same steps on the opposite front brake.
- Replace both front rotors and both front pad sets together.
✅ After Repair
- Before driving, pump the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
- Check brake fluid level in the reservoir.
- Test the brakes at low speed first.
- Listen for rubbing or grinding.
- Bed-in the new pads and rotors with several moderate stops, then let them cool.
- Do not do hard stops right away.
