🔧 Front Brakes and Rotors - Replacement

On your Equinox, this job means removing the front caliper, replacing the brake pads and front rotors, then reassembling everything with the correct torque. Because the front brakes do the most stopping, clean installation and proper torque matter a lot for safety and brake feel.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a flat surface and chock the rear wheels before lifting the front.
  • Use jack stands. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
  • Front brake parts can be hot after driving.
  • Use brake cleaner only in a well-ventilated area.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)

  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting.
  • Open the hood and check the brake fluid level before pushing the caliper pistons back.
  • If the brake fluid is already near MAX, remove a small amount first so it does not overflow.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and remove the front wheel

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of the Equinox at the proper jacking point.
  • Support it with jack stands.
  • Remove the lug nuts with a 21mm socket and take off the wheel.
  • Torque wheel lug nuts to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs) during reassembly.

Step 2: Remove the brake caliper

  • Use a 15mm socket to remove the caliper guide pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket.
  • Hang the caliper with a bungee cord. Do not let it dangle by the hose.
  • Torque caliper guide pin bolts to 31 Nm (23 ft-lbs) on reassembly.

Step 3: Remove the caliper bracket and old rotor

  • Use an 18mm socket and breaker bar to remove the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the bracket from the knuckle.
  • Pull the rotor off the hub.
  • If the rotor is stuck, use a flat screwdriver through the access hole or tap lightly with a mallet.
  • Torque caliper bracket bolts to 200 Nm (148 ft-lbs) on reassembly.

Step 4: Clean and prep the hub

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust and debris from the hub face.
  • Spray the hub and rotor with brake cleaner.
  • Clean hub surfaces prevent rotor wobble.

Step 5: Install the new rotor

  • Install the new rotor onto the hub.
  • If needed, hold it in place with a lug nut hand-tight while you work.

Step 6: Replace pads and service the caliper bracket

  • Remove the old pad clips from the caliper bracket.
  • Install the new hardware from the brake hardware kit.
  • Apply a thin layer of brake caliper grease to the pad contact points and guide pins only.
  • Do not grease the rotor or pad friction material.
  • If the caliper piston is not fully compressed, use a brake caliper compression tool (specialty) or C-clamp to push it in slowly.

Step 7: Reinstall the caliper bracket and caliper

  • Use the 18mm socket to reinstall the caliper bracket.
  • Install the new pads into the bracket.
  • Place the caliper over the pads.
  • Use the 15mm socket to reinstall the guide pin bolts.
  • Torque caliper guide pin bolts to 31 Nm (23 ft-lbs).
  • Torque caliper bracket bolts to 200 Nm (148 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall the wheel

  • Put the wheel back on and hand-start all lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle with the floor jack.
  • Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque wheel lug nuts to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
  • Check brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
  • Start the vehicle and verify there are no warning lights.
  • Test the brakes at low speed first.
  • For the first 200 miles, avoid hard stops unless necessary.
