🔧 Acadia - Front Brake Pads & Rotors Replacement
You’ll remove the front calipers and brackets, replace the pads and rotors, then reinstall everything with proper torque. This restores braking performance and helps prevent vibration or grinding caused by worn pads or warped rotors.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Work on level ground and support your Acadia with jack stands (never rely on a jack alone).
- 🔥 Brakes can be very hot; let them cool before touching rotors/calipers.
- 🧴 Avoid breathing brake dust; use brake cleaner and a mask.
- 🔩 Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose; support it with a hanger/strap.
- 🧯 Keep grease off pad/rotor friction surfaces; clean with brake cleaner if contaminated.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🧱 Park on a flat surface, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🪵 Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
- 🛞 Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting (don’t remove them yet).
- 🧴 Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir; as you push pistons back, fluid level can rise—remove a little fluid if it’s at MAX.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and remove the front wheels
- Use wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar to loosen lug nuts about 1/2 turn.
- Use a floor jack to lift the front of your Acadia, then place jack stands under the proper lift points.
- Remove lug nuts with the 21mm socket and remove the wheel.
Step 2: Remove the front brake caliper
- Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room to work.
- Use a 15mm socket and ratchet to remove the caliper guide pin bolts.
- Carefully lift the caliper off the pads/rotor. If it’s tight, use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry the pads back a little.
- Support the caliper using a caliper hanger hook or bungee cord so the hose isn’t strained.
Step 3: Remove the caliper bracket and old pads
- Slide the old pads out of the bracket by hand.
- Use an 18mm socket and breaker bar to remove the caliper bracket bolts.
- Remove the caliper bracket from the knuckle.
Step 4: Remove the old rotor
- If your Acadia has a rotor retaining screw, remove it using a Torx T30 bit.
- Pull the rotor off the hub. If it’s stuck, tap the rotor hat with a rubber mallet to break rust loose.
Step 5: Clean the hub surface
- Use a wire brush to clean rust from the hub face (where the rotor sits flat).
- Spray the area with brake cleaner and wipe with shop towels.
- A clean hub helps prevent rotor wobble.
Step 6: Install the new rotor
- Spray both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner and wipe dry (removes protective oil).
- Install the new rotor onto the hub.
- If equipped, install the rotor screw using a Torx T30 bit and torque wrench: Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
Step 7: Reinstall the bracket and install new pad hardware
- Install the pad hardware clips (from the pad set) into the bracket by hand.
- Reinstall the caliper bracket using an 18mm socket.
- Tighten bracket bolts with a torque wrench: Torque to 200 Nm (148 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Compress the caliper piston
- Place an old pad against the piston face, then use a C-clamp or disc brake caliper piston tool (specialty) to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
- A “caliper piston” is the round part that squeezes the pads; it must retract to fit new thicker pads.
- Check the brake fluid reservoir level as you compress; remove excess if needed.
Step 9: Install the new pads and reinstall the caliper
- Apply a thin film of brake caliper grease to pad ears/backing contact points (not the friction surface).
- Install the new pads into the bracket by hand.
- Slide the caliper over the new pads/rotor.
- Install and tighten the guide pin bolts using a 15mm socket, then use a torque wrench: Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts
- Put the wheel back on and hand-thread the lug nuts.
- Lower your Acadia off the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Torque lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench and 21mm socket: Torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Repeat on the other front wheel
- Repeat Steps 1–10 on the opposite front side.
- Always do both front brakes together.
✅ After Repair
- 🦶 Before driving, pump the brake pedal slowly 8–12 times until it feels firm (this seats the pistons).
- 🧴 Recheck brake fluid level and adjust to the correct mark.
- 🔍 Look around each caliper for leaks and make sure the brake hose is not twisted.
- 🚗 Bed-in the pads: make 8–10 moderate stops from ~40 mph to ~10 mph, letting brakes cool a bit between stops (avoid hard panic stops for the first 200 miles).
