📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🔓 Loosen the front lug nuts 1/2 turn before lifting, using a 21mm socket and breaker bar.
  • 🧴 Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. Keep the cap loosely set on top (do not remove it completely). This helps piston push-back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front end

  • Lift the front at the approved front jacking point using a floor jack.
  • Set the vehicle onto jack stands placed at the proper front support points.
  • Give the CX-9 a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable.

Step 2: Remove the front wheels

  • Remove lug nuts with a 21mm socket and ratchet.
  • Remove both front wheels and set them aside.
  • During reassembly, lug nuts typically torque to Torque to 108-147 Nm (80-108 ft-lbs) using a 1/2" drive torque wrench.

Step 3: Remove the caliper (the clamp that squeezes the pads)

  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself room (left side: turn wheel right; right side: turn wheel left).
  • Use a flat blade screwdriver to gently pry the caliper outward a few millimeters. Makes bolt removal easier.
  • Remove the two caliper slide bolts using a 14mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket and hang it from the strut spring using a brake caliper hanger hook (specialty) or bungee cord. Never hang by the hose.
  • Reinstall torque (typical): Torque to 25-35 Nm (18-26 ft-lbs) using a 3/8" drive torque wrench.

Step 4: Remove the pads and the caliper bracket (the pad “frame”)

  • Slide the old pads out of the bracket by hand.
  • The caliper bracket is the heavy metal mount the pads sit in.
  • Remove the caliper bracket bolts using a 17mm socket and breaker bar.
  • Reinstall torque (typical): Torque to 90-120 Nm (66-89 ft-lbs) using a 1/2" drive torque wrench.
  • If desired, apply a small amount of medium-strength threadlocker to clean bracket bolt threads before reinstalling.

Step 5: Remove the old rotor

  • Pull the rotor straight off the hub by hand.
  • If it’s stuck from rust, tap the rotor hat between the studs with a rubber mallet until it breaks free.
  • Use a wire brush to clean rust off the hub face (where the rotor sits). A clean hub prevents rotor wobble.

Step 6: Install the new rotor

  • Spray both sides of the new rotor with brake parts cleaner to remove protective oil.
  • Install the rotor onto the hub.
  • To hold the rotor tight while you work, thread on a couple lug nuts backward by hand, then snug them using a 21mm socket (do not fully torque yet).

Step 7: Service the bracket hardware and slide pins

  • Remove the old pad clips from the bracket using a flat blade screwdriver.
  • Clean the clip “shelves” on the bracket using a wire brush and brake parts cleaner.
  • Install the new clips from the hardware kit.
  • Pull the slide pins out (they’re the smooth pins the caliper floats on), wipe them clean, and apply brake caliper slide pin grease (silicone).
  • Reinsert the slide pins and ensure they move smoothly by hand.

Step 8: Reinstall the bracket and install new pads

  • Reinstall the caliper bracket using a 17mm socket and 1/2" drive torque wrench.
  • Torque to 90-120 Nm (66-89 ft-lbs).
  • Install the new pads into the bracket by hand.
  • Apply a thin smear of brake caliper slide pin grease (silicone) to pad “ears” (the metal ends that touch the clips). Do not get grease on pad friction material.

Step 9: Compress the caliper piston and reinstall the caliper

  • Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
  • Use a C-clamp (6") to slowly press the piston back until it’s fully seated. Go slow; watch fluid level.
  • Check the brake fluid reservoir—remove a little with a clean towel if it’s getting too high (use a catch pan underneath).
  • Install the caliper over the new pads.
  • Install the slide bolts using a 14mm socket, then torque with a 3/8" drive torque wrench.
  • Torque to 25-35 Nm (18-26 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Repeat on the other front wheel

  • Repeat Steps 3 through 9 for the other side.
  • Work one side at a time so you can reference the assembled side if needed.

Step 11: Reinstall wheels and lower the vehicle

  • Reinstall wheels and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower the CX-9 off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Torque lug nuts in a star pattern using a 1/2" drive torque wrench: Torque to 108-147 Nm (80-108 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • 🦶 Before starting the engine, pump the brake pedal 10-15 times until it feels firm. This seats the pads.
  • 🧪 Check brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 if needed.
  • 👀 Check for leaks around calipers and confirm no tools are left in the engine bay.
  • 🚗 Bed-in (break-in) the pads/rotors: make 6-10 moderate stops from ~40 mph to ~10 mph, with 30-60 seconds of driving between stops to cool. Avoid hard panic stops for the first 200 miles.
  • 🔊 If you hear grinding, strong pulling, or the pedal stays soft, stop driving and recheck your work.
