🔧 GX460 - Front Brake Pads & Rotor Replacement

You’ll remove the front wheels, swap the brake pads, and replace the front rotors. Worn pads or warped rotors can cause squealing, grinding, vibration while braking, or longer stopping distances.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

Assumption: Stock GX460 front 4-piston fixed calipers; torque specs listed are commonly used OEM specs—verify with your service info if you have it.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Support the A4—oops—support your GX460 on jack stands before working under/around the wheels.
  • 🧤 Brake dust is harmful—wear gloves and a dust mask; do not blow dust with compressed air.
  • 🔥 Brakes can be extremely hot—let everything cool before starting.
  • 🧴 Brake fluid can damage paint—wipe spills immediately and keep the cap on the reservoir.
  • 🔩 Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose—support it with a strap.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this front brake job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket
  • 17mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 1/2" breaker bar
  • Torque wrench (20-200 ft-lbs range)
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Punch set (3/16" punch)
  • Small hammer
  • C-clamp (6" minimum)
  • Brake piston spreader (specialty)
  • Bungee cord
  • Wire brush
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Shop towels
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Dust mask

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Front brake rotors - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Front pad hardware kit (pins/clips/anti-rattle springs) - Qty: 1
  • Brake grease (high-temp silicone or ceramic) - Qty: 1
  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 2 cans
  • DOT 3 brake fluid - Qty: 1 quart

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🧱 Park on level ground, put the transmission in P, and set the parking brake.
  • 🪵 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🛞 Crack the front lug nuts loose 1/2 turn using a 21mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
  • 🧴 Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. Keep the cap on, but be ready: fluid level may rise when you push pistons back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front end

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of the GX460 at the proper front lift point.
  • Set the frame onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and gently shake the truck to confirm it’s stable.

Step 2: Remove the front wheels

  • Remove the lug nuts using a 21mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Remove both front wheels and set them aside.

Step 3: Remove pad pins and anti-rattle spring

  • Use needle-nose pliers to remove any small retaining clips (if equipped).
  • Use a 3/16" punch and small hammer to tap the pad pins out. (A punch is a small metal rod used to drive pins out safely.)
  • Remove the anti-rattle spring and note how it sits for reassembly.

Step 4: Remove the brake pads

  • Slide the pads out of the caliper by hand. If they’re tight, gently pry with a flathead screwdriver.
  • Tip: Take a quick photo before disassembly.

Step 5: Remove the front caliper (support it)

  • Remove the two caliper mounting bolts using a 17mm socket and breaker bar.
  • Lift the caliper off the rotor and hang it from the suspension using a bungee cord (do not stress the hose).
  • For reinstall: Torque to 123 Nm (91 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Remove the rotor

  • Pull the rotor off the hub. If it’s stuck from rust, spray the hub/rotor center with brake cleaner spray and let it soak.
  • Tap the rotor hat area with a small hammer to break it free (avoid hitting wheel studs).

Step 7: Clean the hub face

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust off the hub face where the rotor sits.
  • Spray with brake cleaner spray and wipe with shop towels.
  • Tip: A clean hub helps prevent brake pulsation.

Step 8: Install the new rotor

  • Clean both sides of the new rotor using brake cleaner spray and shop towels (removes packing oil).
  • Slide the rotor onto the hub.
  • Temporarily hold the rotor tight to the hub by hand-tightening two lug nuts using a 21mm socket.

Step 9: Retract the caliper pistons

  • Place an old brake pad against the pistons.
  • Use a brake piston spreader (specialty) to push the pistons back evenly. (A piston spreader presses multiple pistons back smoothly.)
  • If using a C-clamp (6" minimum), compress slowly and evenly—alternate side-to-side so the pistons don’t cock.
  • Check the brake fluid reservoir level as you compress; remove excess only if it’s close to overflowing.

Step 10: Reinstall the caliper over the new rotor

  • Set the caliper back into place over the rotor.
  • Install the caliper mounting bolts by hand first, then tighten using a 17mm socket.
  • Torque to 123 Nm (91 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench.

Step 11: Install new pads and hardware

  • Install any new clips/small hardware from the kit (match the original layout).
  • Apply a thin layer of brake grease where the pads slide on hardware and at pad backing contact points (do not get grease on pad friction material).
  • Slide the new pads into the caliper.

Step 12: Reinstall pad pins and anti-rattle spring

  • Position the anti-rattle spring correctly.
  • Slide the pad pins through and tap them home using a 3/16" punch and small hammer.
  • Reinstall any retaining clips using needle-nose pliers.

Step 13: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Reinstall the wheels and hand-thread the lug nuts.
  • Lower the GX460 off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench: Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).

âś… After Repair

  • 🦶 Pump the brake pedal 10-15 times until it feels firm before moving the GX460.
  • 🧴 Check brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 brake fluid if needed.
  • 🔍 Check for abnormal noises and confirm braking is smooth on a slow test drive.
  • 🛑 Pad bed-in (break-in): make 8-10 moderate stops from ~30 mph to ~5 mph, allowing short cool-down between stops; avoid hard panic stops for the first 200 miles.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $650-$1,200 (parts + labor)
