🔧 Front Brakes and Rotors - Replacement
Your front brake pads and rotors wear together, so replacing them as a set helps keep braking smooth and even. On your Grand Cherokee, the front brake job is straightforward if you support the vehicle safely and keep the caliper from hanging by the hose.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a flat surface and chock the rear wheels.
- Use jack stands. Do not rely on the floor jack alone.
- Do not let the brake caliper hang by the hose.
- Brake dust can be harmful. Use brake cleaner instead of compressed air.
- Keep grease and oil off the rotor and pad friction surfaces.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

- Chock the rear wheels.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the front wheels
- Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts about one turn each.
- Do not remove them yet.
Step 2: Raise and secure the vehicle
- Use the floor jack to lift the front of your Grand Cherokee at the approved lift point.
- Set the vehicle on jack stands and make sure it is stable before working.
- Remove both front wheels with the 21mm socket.
Step 3: Remove the caliper
- Use a 13mm socket to remove the caliper slide pin bolts.
- Lift the caliper off the bracket carefully.
- Hang the caliper with a bungee cord or caliper hanger.
- Never let it hang by the hose.
Step 4: Remove the brake pads and bracket
- Slide the brake pads out of the bracket.
- Use a 19mm socket to remove the caliper bracket bolts.
- Remove the bracket from the knuckle.
Step 5: Remove the rotor
- Remove the rotor retaining screw with a flat screwdriver if equipped.
- If the rotor is stuck, tap it evenly from the back with a rubber mallet or strike the hat section lightly.
- Remove the rotor from the hub.
Step 6: Clean and prep the hub
- Use a wire brush to clean rust from the hub face.
- Spray the hub and new rotor with brake cleaner to remove oil and dust.
- A clean hub prevents rotor wobble.
Step 7: Install the new rotor
- Install the new rotor onto the hub.
- If provided, install the rotor retaining screw and tighten snugly.
Step 8: Reinstall the caliper bracket
- Put the caliper bracket back on and start the bolts by hand.
- Use a 19mm socket to tighten the bracket bolts.
- Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Install the new pads
- Apply a thin layer of brake grease to the pad ears and contact points only.
- Install the new pads into the bracket.
- If the pad hardware is included, replace it now.
Step 10: Compress the caliper piston
- Use a C-clamp to slowly push the caliper piston back in.
- Compress it enough so the caliper fits over the new pads.
- Go slowly to avoid seal damage.
Step 11: Reinstall the caliper
- Set the caliper over the new pads.
- Use a 13mm socket to install and tighten the slide pin bolts.
- Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Reinstall the wheel
- Put the wheel back on and start the lug nuts by hand.
- Lower the vehicle carefully.
- Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Repeat on the other side
- Perform the same steps on the opposite front brake assembly.
✅ After Repair
- Before driving, pump the brake pedal until it feels firm.
- Check brake fluid level in the reservoir.
- Test the brakes at low speed first.
- Listen for rubbing, clicking, or grinding sounds.
- Break in the new pads and rotors with several gentle stops.
