đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, turn the engine off, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the car.
  • Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir; keep the cap loose so fluid can rise when you compress the pistons.
  • If the reservoir is very full, remove a little fluid with a clean towel (do not spill on paint).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the front and remove the wheels

  • Use a breaker bar (1/2") with a 19mm socket to crack the lug nuts loose (about 1/2 turn).
  • Lift the front using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove lug nuts with a 19mm socket and take both front wheels off.

Step 2: Remove the front caliper (the clamp that holds the pads)

  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room at the side you’re working on.
  • Use a 14mm socket and ratchet (3/8") to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Carefully lift the caliper off the bracket. Hang it from the strut spring using a bungee cord (never let it hang by the hose).
  • Caliper slide pins are the bolts the caliper “floats” on.

Step 3: Remove the pads and caliper bracket

  • Pull the old pads out of the bracket by hand. If stuck, gently pry with a flat blade screwdriver.
  • Use a 17mm socket and breaker bar (1/2") to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the bracket and set it aside.
  • When reinstalling later: Torque the caliper bracket bolts to 114 N·m (84 ft-lbs).
  • “Caliper bracket” is the solid mount the caliper bolts to.

Step 4: Remove the old rotor

  • If the rotor is stuck, spray the hub area with brake parts cleaner spray and tap the rotor hat with a rubber mallet.
  • If it still won’t move, thread two M8 x 1.25 bolts (2 pcs, 25-40mm long) into the rotor’s jacking holes evenly, alternating turns to push the rotor off.
  • Remove the rotor.

Step 5: Clean and prep the hub and bracket

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust off the hub face (where the rotor sits flat).
  • Clean the bracket and the hardware lands (where pad clips sit) using brake parts cleaner spray and shop towels.
  • Install new pad clips from the front brake hardware kit (if included).
  • A clean hub helps prevent brake pulsation.

Step 6: Install the new rotor

  • Spray the new rotor faces with brake parts cleaner spray and wipe with shop towels (removes shipping oil).
  • Place the rotor onto the hub.
  • To hold it in place while you work, install one lug nut backward by hand (use the 19mm socket only lightly).

Step 7: Reinstall the caliper bracket

  • Position the bracket over the rotor and start both bolts by hand.
  • Tighten using a 17mm socket and ratchet (3/8"), then final-tighten with a torque wrench (10-200 ft-lbs range).
  • Torque to 114 N·m (84 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Compress the caliper piston

  • Before compressing, check the brake fluid reservoir level under the hood.
  • Use a caliper piston compressor tool (specialty) to slowly press the piston straight back into the caliper.
  • If fluid rises near the top of the reservoir, stop and remove a little with a towel.
  • Go slow to avoid damaging the piston seal.

Step 9: Install the new pads

  • Apply a thin layer of silicone brake grease to pad ears (where they touch the clips) and to the back of pads where they contact the caliper/bracket.
  • Do not get grease on the pad friction material or rotor face.
  • Slide the new pads into the bracket.

Step 10: Reinstall the caliper

  • Set the caliper over the new pads.
  • Install the slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet (3/8").
  • Final-tighten with a torque wrench (10-200 ft-lbs range).
  • Torque the caliper slide pin bolts to 27 N·m (20 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Repeat on the other front side

  • Repeat Steps 2 through 10 on the other front wheel.

Step 12: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Reinstall both front wheels and hand-thread all lug nuts.
  • Lower the car off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Use a torque wrench (10-200 ft-lbs range) with a 19mm socket to tighten lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque lug nuts to 120 N·m (88.5 ft-lbs).

âś… After Repair

  • With the car on the ground, pump the brake pedal 10-15 times until it feels firm (this seats the pads).
  • Check brake fluid level and top off with brake fluid (DOT 3 or DOT 4) if needed.
  • Test at low speed first. Make sure the car stops straight and no grinding noises.
  • Bed-in (break-in) the pads: make 6-10 moderate stops from 35 mph to 5 mph, then drive to cool the brakes. Avoid hard stops for the first 200 miles.
