🔧 MX-5 Miata - Front Brake Pads & Rotor Replacement

You’ll remove the front wheels, take off the brake calipers, replace the pads and rotors, then reassemble and bed-in the new pads. This restores braking power and eliminates pulsation or grinding caused by worn pads or warped rotors.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Support the car on jack stands before working underneath.
  • 🔥 Brakes can be extremely hot; let them cool fully.
  • 🧴 Don’t inhale brake dust; use brake cleaner and avoid compressed air.
  • 🧯 Never hang the caliper by the brake hose—support it with a hook/strap.
  • 🧪 Brake fluid damages paint; wipe spills immediately.
  • 🔧 If your brake pedal goes to the floor after the job, do not drive—recheck assembly.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • Torque wrench (10-200 Nm range)
  • 14mm socket
  • 17mm socket
  • Phillips #3 screwdriver
  • Manual impact driver (specialty)
  • C-clamp (6" minimum)
  • Flat trim/pry tool
  • Bungee cord or caliper hook
  • Wire brush
  • Rubber mallet
  • Brake parts cleaner spray
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Front brake rotors - Qty: 2
  • Front pad hardware/clip kit - Qty: 1
  • Brake caliper grease (silicone) - Qty: 1
  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1
  • Brake fluid (DOT 3) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Crack the front lug nuts loose using a 21mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
  • Open the hood and check the brake fluid level—when you compress the pistons, the fluid level rises.
  • “Caliper bracket” is the heavy mount behind the caliper.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the front and remove the wheels

  • Use a floor jack at the front jacking point and set the car down onto jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels with a 21mm socket and ratchet.

Step 2: Remove the caliper (do not stretch the hose)

  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room at the side you’re working on.
  • Remove the two caliper slide bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket and hang it from the suspension using a bungee cord or caliper hook.
  • Never let the caliper dangle.

Step 3: Remove the old pads and hardware

  • Pull the pads out of the bracket by hand; use a flat trim/pry tool if they’re stuck.
  • Remove the pad clips/hardware from the bracket.
  • Clean the bracket pad “rails” with brake parts cleaner spray and a wire brush.

Step 4: Remove the caliper bracket

  • Remove the two bracket bolts using a 17mm socket and breaker bar.
  • Set the bracket aside.

Step 5: Remove the rotor

  • If your rotor has a retaining screw, remove it using a Phillips #3 screwdriver.
  • If the screw is stuck, use a manual impact driver (specialty) to break it free.
  • Pull the rotor off. If seized to the hub, tap the rotor hat with a rubber mallet to loosen it.
  • Clean the hub face with a wire brush and brake parts cleaner spray so the new rotor sits perfectly flat.

Step 6: Install the new rotor

  • Clean the new rotor surfaces using brake parts cleaner spray and shop towels (removes shipping oil).
  • Install the rotor onto the hub.
  • If equipped, reinstall the retaining screw using a Phillips #3 screwdriver (snug only).

Step 7: Reinstall the caliper bracket

  • Reinstall the bracket bolts using a 17mm socket and ratchet, then tighten with a torque wrench.
  • Torque to 88-118 Nm (65-87 ft-lbs)

Step 8: Compress the caliper piston

  • Place one old brake pad against the piston face.
  • Use a C-clamp (6" minimum) to slowly push the piston back into the caliper.
  • Keep an eye on the brake fluid reservoir under the hood so it doesn’t overflow.
  • Go slow to protect the seals.

Step 9: Install new pad hardware and pads

  • Install the new pad clips/hardware onto the bracket by hand.
  • Apply a thin film of brake caliper grease (silicone) to pad contact points on the clips (not on friction material).
  • Install the new pads into the bracket.

Step 10: Reinstall the caliper

  • Lower the caliper over the new pads.
  • Reinstall the caliper slide bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet, then tighten with a torque wrench.
  • Torque to 25-35 Nm (18-26 ft-lbs)

Step 11: Reinstall wheels and lower the car

  • Reinstall the wheels and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower the car off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench.
  • Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs)

Step 12: Repeat on the other front wheel

  • Do the exact same procedure on the other side.
  • Front brakes must be replaced in pairs.

✅ After Repair

  • With the engine off, pump the brake pedal 10-15 times until it feels firm (this seats the pistons).
  • Check brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 if needed.
  • Test at low speed first; confirm normal braking and no pulling/noise.
  • Bed-in the pads: make 6-10 moderate stops from ~60 km/h to ~15 km/h, allowing short cool-down between stops (avoid full stops during bedding if safe).
  • Recheck lug nut torque after 50-100 km using a torque wrench.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹9,000-₹18,000 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹5,000-₹12,000 (parts only)
