🔧 Front Brakes & Rotors - Replacement
The front brake pads and rotors on your Tacoma wear together, so replacing both at the same time gives the best pedal feel and braking performance. This job involves removing the front caliper and bracket, swapping the rotor, then installing new pads and bedding them in.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a flat surface and chock the rear wheels before lifting the truck.
- Use jack stands. Never rely on the floor jack alone.
- Brakes can be hot. Let everything cool before starting.
- Do not press the brake pedal with the caliper removed.
- Support the caliper with wire or a hook so the brake hose is not strained.
- No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground.
- Set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels.
- Loosen the front lug nuts before lifting the truck.
- Have the new pads and rotors ready before disassembly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and remove the wheel
- Use the floor jack to lift the front corner of the Tacoma.
- Set the frame securely on a jack stand.
- Remove the lug nuts with the 21mm lug wrench or socket.
- Take off the wheel and set it aside.
- Keep the lug nuts in a safe spot.
Step 2: Remove the brake caliper
- Locate the caliper slide bolts on the back of the caliper.
- Use the 14mm socket to remove the two slide bolts.
- Lift the caliper off the bracket.
- Hang the caliper with a bungee cord or mechanic's hook.
- Do not let the hose carry the weight.
Step 3: Remove the caliper bracket
- Use the 17mm socket and breaker bar to remove the two bracket bolts.
- Remove the caliper bracket from the knuckle.
- Torque on reassembly: 152 Nm (112 ft-lbs)
Step 4: Remove the old rotor
- If the rotor is stuck, tap it behind the hat area with a flat blade screwdriver or pull it off by hand.
- If there is a small rotor retaining screw, remove it with the correct driver first.
- Take the rotor off the hub.
- Clean the hub face with a wire brush and brake cleaner.
- A clean hub helps prevent brake pulsation.
Step 5: Install the new rotor
- Spray the new rotor with brake cleaner and wipe it dry.
- Slide the rotor onto the hub.
- If needed, hold it in place with one lug nut hand-tight.
Step 6: Install pads and caliper bracket
- Install the new pad hardware from the brake hardware kit if included.
- Apply a thin layer of brake grease to pad contact points and slide areas.
- Install the new pads into the bracket.
- Reinstall the bracket with the 17mm socket.
- Torque the bracket bolts to 152 Nm (112 ft-lbs)
Step 7: Compress and reinstall the caliper
- Use the C-clamp or brake caliper compression tool to push the caliper piston fully back in.
- Make sure the old pads are not stuck against the piston.
- Slide the caliper over the new pads.
- Install the slide bolts with the 14mm socket.
- Torque the caliper slide bolts to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs)
Step 8: Reinstall the wheel
- Put the wheel back on.
- Thread the lug nuts by hand first.
- Lower the Tacoma enough for the tire to touch the ground.
- Use the 21mm lug wrench or socket to snug the lug nuts.
- Final lug nut torque: 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs)
Step 9: Repeat on the other side
- Replace both front rotors and both front pad sets.
- Always do brakes in pairs.
✅ After Repair
- Press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
- Check the brake fluid level.
- Verify the wheels spin freely without dragging noise.
- Test the brakes at low speed first.
- Bed the pads with several moderate stops, then let them cool.
