📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, put the transmission in gear, and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Crack the front lug nuts loose before lifting the vehicle.
- Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir so you can monitor the fluid level while compressing the caliper piston.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen lug nuts and raise the front
- Use a 19mm socket and breaker bar 1/2" to loosen (do not remove) the front lug nuts.
- Lift the front with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support it with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Remove the lug nuts and wheel using the 19mm socket.
Step 2: Inspect and prep the caliper
- Turn the steering to give yourself room (left side: steer right; right side: steer left).
- Look at the brake hose to make sure it won’t be stretched during the job.
- Take a quick photo for reassembly.
Step 3: Remove the caliper (the part that squeezes the pads)
- Use a 13mm socket and ratchet 3/8" to remove the two caliper slide-pin bolts.
- Lift the caliper off the rotor.
- Hang the caliper with a bungee cord so it’s not hanging by the brake hose. (A bungee cord is just a stretchy strap used to support the caliper.)
Step 4: Remove the old pads and hardware
- Remove the inner and outer brake pads by hand.
- Remove the stainless pad clips from the bracket using a flat-blade screwdriver.
- Clean the bracket pad “rails” (where the clips sit) using brake cleaner spray and a wire brush.
Step 5: Remove the caliper bracket
- Use a 21mm socket and ratchet 1/2" (or breaker bar 1/2") to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
- Remove the bracket and set it aside.
- During reassembly: Torque to 125 Nm (92 ft-lbs)
Step 6: Remove the rotor
- If your rotor has a retaining screw, remove it using a Phillips screwdriver #2.
- Pull the rotor off the hub. If stuck, tap around the rotor “hat” with a rubber mallet to break rust loose.
- Clean the hub face with a wire brush, then spray with brake cleaner spray and wipe clean. A clean hub helps prevent brake vibration.
Step 7: Install the new rotor
- Clean both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner spray to remove protective oil.
- Install the rotor onto the hub.
- If equipped with a retaining screw, reinstall it using a Phillips screwdriver #2 and Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
Step 8: Reinstall the caliper bracket with new hardware
- Install the new pad clips from the brake caliper hardware kit into the bracket.
- Apply a thin film of brake lubricant where the pad ears touch the clips (not on the pad friction material).
- Reinstall the bracket and start both bolts by hand, then tighten with a 21mm socket and torque wrench 1/2".
- Torque to 125 Nm (92 ft-lbs)
Step 9: Compress the caliper piston
- Before compressing, check the brake fluid reservoir level under the hood.
- Use a C-clamp (6-inch minimum) to slowly push the caliper piston fully back into the caliper.
- If the fluid level gets too high, remove a small amount (keep it clean—no dirt).
- Go slow to avoid damaging seals.
Step 10: Install new pads and reinstall the caliper
- Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket.
- Place the caliper over the pads and rotor.
- Reinstall the two caliper slide-pin bolts using a 13mm socket and torque wrench 3/8".
- Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs)
Step 11: Reinstall the wheel
- Reinstall the wheel and hand-thread the lug nuts.
- Lower the vehicle off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a 19mm socket and torque wrench 1/2".
- Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs)
Step 12: Repeat on the other front wheel
- Repeat Steps 1–11 on the other side.
- Always replace rotors and pads in pairs.
✅ After Repair
- With the engine off, slowly pump the brake pedal 10–15 times until it feels firm.
- Check brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
- Start the engine and confirm the pedal feels normal (it may drop slightly with brake assist).
- Do a slow test drive and confirm no pulling, grinding, or warning lights.
- Pad bedding (break-in): make 8–10 medium stops from 30–40 mph, then drive a few minutes to cool.
