🔧 Front Brakes & Rotors - Replacement

Your front brake pads and rotors wear together, so replacing both at the same time gives the best pedal feel and stopping power. On your Rogue, the job is straightforward if you take your time, keep everything clean, and torque the fasteners correctly.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on level ground and chock the rear wheels before lifting the front.
  • Use jack stands under the front pinch welds or approved lift points. Never rely on the jack alone.
  • Let the brakes cool before starting. Rotors and calipers can be very hot.
  • Do not press the brake pedal with the caliper removed.
  • Keep brake fluid off painted surfaces. It can damage paint quickly.
  • If equipped, make sure the parking brake is fully released before moving the vehicle.

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Front brake rotors - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Brake hardware kit - Qty: 1
  • Brake caliper slide pin grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts before lifting the vehicle.
  • Keep the transmission in Park and the rear wheels chocked.
  • Open the hood and check the brake fluid level before pushing the caliper pistons back. If the reservoir is full, remove a little fluid first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and remove the front wheels

  • Use the 21mm lug wrench or socket to loosen the front lug nuts 1 turn each.
  • Raise the front of the Rogue with the floor jack.
  • Support it with jack stands.
  • Remove both front wheels.

Step 2: Remove the caliper

  • Use a 14mm socket to remove the caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket.
  • Hang the caliper with a bungee cord or mechanic’s wire. Do not let it dangle by the brake hose.

Step 3: Remove the old pads and bracket

  • Slide the old brake pads out of the bracket.
  • Use a 17mm socket to remove the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the bracket from the steering knuckle.
  • Keep the bolts organized.

Step 4: Remove the rotor

  • If the rotor is stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver to remove the small retaining screw if equipped.
  • Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
  • If it is seized, tap the rotor hat lightly from behind with a soft mallet.
  • Use a wire brush to clean rust off the hub face.

Step 5: Install the new rotor

  • Spray the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove the protective oil.
  • Install the rotor onto the hub.
  • If equipped, install the retaining screw and Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).

Step 6: Install the caliper bracket and pads

  • Reinstall the caliper bracket with the 17mm socket.
  • Torque to 98 Nm (72 ft-lbs).
  • Apply a light coat of brake caliper slide pin grease to the pad contact points and slide pins.
  • Install the new brake pads and any new hardware clips.
  • Make sure the pads move freely.

Step 7: Compress the caliper piston and reinstall the caliper

  • Use a C-clamp or brake piston tool to slowly push the caliper piston fully back into the bore.
  • Install the caliper over the new pads.
  • Install the slide pin bolts with the 14mm socket.
  • Torque to 32 Nm (24 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall wheels and lower the vehicle

  • Install both front wheels.
  • Hand-tighten the lug nuts with the 21mm lug wrench or socket.
  • Lower the vehicle with the floor jack.
  • Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs) in a star pattern.

Step 9: Pump the brake pedal

  • Before moving the Rogue, pump the brake pedal slowly until it feels firm.
  • Check the brake fluid level and top off if needed.

✅ After Repair

  • Test the brakes at low speed in a safe area first.
  • Listen for rubbing, clicking, or grinding.
  • Check both front wheels and calipers for leaks.
  • Bedding the brakes helps them perform better: make several moderate stops from low-to-medium speed, then let them cool.
