🔧 Soul - Front Brake Pads & Rotor Replacement

You’ll remove the front wheels, take off the brake caliper and bracket, replace the rotor, then install new brake pads and reassemble everything. This restores safe stopping power and helps prevent vibration, noise, and uneven wear.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work on level ground and support your Soul with jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
  • 🛑 Brake dust is harmful—use brake cleaner, not compressed air, and wear a mask.
  • 🛑 Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose—support it with a hook or bungee cord.
  • 🛑 Keep grease and brake fluid off pad/rotor friction surfaces.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum, pair)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket
  • Ratchet (3/8")
  • Breaker bar (1/2")
  • Torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs range)
  • 14mm socket
  • 17mm socket
  • Phillips #3 screwdriver
  • Manual impact driver (specialty)
  • C-clamp (6-inch minimum)
  • Bungee cord
  • Wire brush
  • Rubber mallet
  • Brake parts cleaner spray
  • Gloves (nitrile)
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Front brake rotors - Qty: 2
  • Front brake hardware kit (pad clips) - Qty: 1
  • Silicone brake grease - Qty: 1
  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, steering wheel straight, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
  • Crack the front lug nuts loose slightly using a 21mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
  • Open the hood and remove the brake fluid reservoir cap (set it loosely on top). This helps when pushing the caliper piston back.
  • Take a photo of pad/clips before removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and remove the front wheels

  • Lift the front using a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) at the front jack point.
  • Place jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum, pair) under the proper support points and lower the car onto them.
  • Remove the lug nuts using a 21mm socket and ratchet (3/8"), then remove the wheel.

Step 2: Remove the brake caliper (the clamp that holds the pads)

  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room at the side you’re working on.
  • Remove the 2 caliper slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet (3/8").
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket and support it with a bungee cord.
  • Never let the caliper hang by the hose.

Step 3: Remove the old brake pads and hardware

  • Slide the brake pads out by hand (a gentle wiggle helps).
  • Remove the stainless pad clips from the bracket (these are the “hardware”).
  • Clean the bracket pad contact areas using brake parts cleaner spray and a wire brush.

Step 4: Remove the caliper bracket (the carrier)

  • Remove the 2 caliper bracket bolts using a 17mm socket and breaker bar (1/2").
  • Set the bracket aside.

Step 5: Remove the old rotor

  • If your rotor has a retaining screw, remove it using a manual impact driver (specialty) with a Phillips #3 screwdriver bit.
  • Pull the rotor off. If it’s stuck, tap the rotor “hat” area with a rubber mallet to break it free.
  • Clean the hub face (where the rotor sits) using a wire brush and brake parts cleaner spray.
  • A clean hub helps prevent brake vibration.

Step 6: Install the new rotor

  • Clean both sides of the new rotor using brake parts cleaner spray to remove packing oil.
  • Install the rotor onto the hub.
  • If equipped, reinstall the rotor retaining screw using a Phillips #3 screwdriver (snug only).

Step 7: Reinstall the caliper bracket

  • Reinstall the bracket and start both bolts by hand.
  • Tighten the bracket bolts using a 17mm socket and torque wrench.
  • Torque to 78–98 Nm (58–72 ft-lbs)

Step 8: Install new pad hardware and pads

  • Install the new pad clips onto the bracket by hand (they should snap/seat fully).
  • Apply a very thin film of silicone brake grease where the pad ears touch the clips.
  • Slide the new pads into place.
  • Keep grease off the pad friction surface.

Step 9: Compress the caliper piston

  • Place one old pad against the caliper piston face.
  • Use a C-clamp (6-inch minimum) to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir level—remove fluid if it gets too high.
  • Push slowly to avoid damaging seals.

Step 10: Reinstall the caliper

  • Set the caliper over the new pads/rotor.
  • Reinstall the 2 slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket and torque wrench.
  • Torque to 20–29 Nm (15–21 ft-lbs)

Step 11: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 2–10 on the other front wheel.
  • Replace pads and rotors as a set across the axle (both sides).

Step 12: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Reinstall the wheels and hand-tighten lug nuts using a 21mm socket.
  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern with a torque wrench.
  • Torque to 90–110 Nm (66–81 ft-lbs)

✅ After Repair

  • With the engine OFF, pump the brake pedal 10–15 times until it feels firm.
  • Check brake fluid level and install the reservoir cap.
  • Start the engine and confirm the pedal stays firm.
  • Do a slow test drive, then re-check for leaks, odd noises, or pulling.
  • Pad bedding: make 6–10 moderate stops from 35 mph to 5 mph, letting brakes cool 30–60 seconds between stops.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
