🔧 Grand Cherokee - Front Brake Pad and Rotor Replacement

This repair replaces the front brake pads and front brake rotors on your Grand Cherokee. The pads create stopping friction, and the rotors are the round metal discs the pads squeeze against.

Difficulty Level: Beginner to Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a flat, solid surface only. Never rely on a jack by itself.
  • ⚠️ Use jack stands before putting any part of your body near the wheel area.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust can be harmful. Do not blow it with compressed air.
  • ⚠️ The brake caliper must be supported. Do not let it hang by the rubber brake hose.
  • ⚠️ Front brakes do not require Electronic Parking Brake service mode on your Grand Cherokee.
  • ⚠️ If the brake pedal feels soft after repair, do not drive until the issue is corrected.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 22mm lug nut socket
  • 1/2-inch drive breaker bar
  • 1/2-inch drive torque wrench
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 13mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Brake caliper compression tool (specialty)
  • Bungee cord
  • Rubber mallet
  • Wire brush
  • Brake parts cleaner spray
  • Catch pan
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

A breaker bar is a long handle used to loosen tight bolts. A torque wrench tightens bolts to the correct force so they are not too loose or too tight.

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Front brake rotors - Qty: 2
  • Front brake hardware kit - Qty: 1
  • Brake lubricant - Qty: 1
  • Brake parts cleaner - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground and shift to Park.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🧤 Put on safety glasses and gloves.
  • 🧪 Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir. If it is near the MAX line, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool before compressing calipers.
  • 📱 No Uconnect menu steps or scan tool commands are required for the front brake pads and rotors.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts

  • Use a 22mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about half a turn.
  • Do this while the tires are still touching the ground.
  • Tip: Loosen, do not remove yet.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Grand Cherokee at the front crossmember lift point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame support points.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
  • Give the vehicle a light push with your hands to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 22mm lug nut socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.

Step 4: Remove the Brake Caliper

  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room on the side you are working on.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts from the back of the caliper.
  • Slide the caliper off the rotor.
  • Use a bungee cord to hang the caliper from the suspension spring or upper control arm.
  • Do not let the caliper hang from the brake hose.

Step 5: Remove the Old Brake Pads

  • Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
  • Remove the old stainless pad clips from the bracket by hand or with the flathead screwdriver.
  • Notice the pad position before removal so the new pads go in the same way.

Step 6: Remove the Caliper Bracket

  • Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
  • Lift the caliper bracket away from the rotor.
  • These bolts are tight from the factory, so keep the socket straight on the bolt head.

Step 7: Remove the Old Rotor

  • Pull the rotor straight off the wheel hub by hand.
  • If the rotor is stuck from rust, tap the rotor hat area with a rubber mallet.
  • Do not hit the wheel studs.
  • Place a catch pan under the brake area and spray the hub with brake parts cleaner spray.

Step 8: Clean the Hub and Bracket

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust from the wheel hub face where the rotor sits.
  • Use the wire brush to clean the pad contact areas on the caliper bracket.
  • Spray the cleaned areas with brake parts cleaner spray and let them dry.
  • Tip: A clean hub prevents brake vibration.

Step 9: Install the New Rotor

  • Spray both sides of the new rotor friction surface with brake parts cleaner spray.
  • Wipe it dry with a clean lint-free shop towel.
  • Slide the new rotor onto the hub.
  • Thread one lug nut on by hand to hold the rotor flat while you work.

Step 10: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Place the caliper bracket over the new rotor.
  • Start both bracket bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Torque to 175 Nm (129 ft-lbs)

Step 11: Install New Brake Hardware and Pads

  • Install the new stainless brake pad clips from the front brake hardware kit into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Apply a thin layer of brake lubricant to the pad ears where they touch the clips.
  • Do not put lubricant on the pad friction material or rotor surface.
  • Slide the new inner and outer brake pads into the bracket by hand.
  • The pads should move smoothly without being loose.

Step 12: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Check the brake fluid reservoir again before compressing the piston.
  • Use a brake caliper compression tool to slowly push the caliper piston fully back into the caliper.
  • A brake caliper compression tool pushes the piston back evenly so the new thicker pads fit.
  • Move slowly so brake fluid does not overflow from the reservoir.

Step 13: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the bungee cord and place the caliper over the new pads.
  • Start both caliper slide pin bolts by hand.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolts.
  • Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench with the 13mm socket to tighten the caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Torque to 44 Nm (32 ft-lbs)

Step 14: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 13 on the other front wheel.
  • Always replace front pads and rotors as a pair, left and right together.

Step 15: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Remove the temporary lug nut holding each rotor.
  • Install the wheels by hand.
  • Use the 22mm lug nut socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the vehicle slightly and remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower the vehicle until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use the 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 22mm lug nut socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs)

Step 16: Pump the Brake Pedal

  • Before starting or moving the vehicle, press the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
  • This seats the caliper pistons against the new pads.
  • If you skip this, the pedal may go low on the first press.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Check the brake fluid level and set it between MIN and MAX.
  • ✅ Look behind each front wheel for fluid leaks or twisted brake hoses.
  • ✅ Test the brake pedal. It should feel firm before driving.
  • ✅ Drive slowly in a safe area first and confirm normal stopping.
  • ✅ Bed in the brakes: make 8-10 moderate stops from about 30-35 mph, allowing 30 seconds of cooling between stops.
  • ✅ Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles unless needed for safety.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after the first short drive.
